I want to change my HDD(i got the 60 gb) and i was wondering about a few things: a-can i use a 7200 RPM instead of a 5400 RPM? will it cause overheating or any other problems? b-can i get a higher cache like 32 instead of the standard 8? c-what is the max storage supported? I'm thinking 320 or 500 gb d- data backup is the biggest issue I've got i know that bla bla and bla can be backed and i also know that certain copyrighted bla and bla cant be backed. what nobody is clear about is the installed game data or the updated/patched game data. those are really hard to do over again and they are time consuming. i have a normal dl speed and i don't want to go through the process of patching again specially since they cant be done in the background. also i would like to know what happens to downloaded games/demos and user-data/firmware? Should i deactivate my ps3 before changing the hdd and then reactivate on the new one? i would appreciate definitive answers backed by proper knowledge instead of maybes and guesses cause Ive read a lot of those on the internet and the weren't helpful. thanks

- You can use a 7200 RPM if you want, it's not too much different from what I've read. It may run slightly faster, and I mean slightly, faster than a 5400. -I don't see why not, though the higher cache ones are more expensive I would think. -320GB would be plenty, how fast did you use up your 60? - You can transfer all your stuff to an external hard drive, though that just be another thing to buy. And you also would have to reformat it to FAT32. I plan on not doing that and instead backing up my save games on a USB drive, and as for the games that are copy protected, I'm just going to buy a month of PS+ so I can use the Online Storage function which can save game saves on it even if they are copy protected. Of course this option would mean re-installing every game and patch like you said, which yes, would be time consuming. But I'm too cheap to buy an external hard drive just to back up and restore all my data. -Downloaded games and demos can be re-downloaded from the Playstation Store. And depending on what option you choose, you'll either restore all your data to your PS3, or you'll have to put everything back on there. Your PSN stuff won't be affected and you can sign back in no problem. -When replacing the HDD, shut off and unplug your PS3, then swap the hard drives, and then format the new hard drive (you should be able to find info on how to do that, it doesn't sound hard but I forget exactly what you do) I've been looking into doing this myself for a little while now as I'm running out of space, so I hope some of my answers have been somewhat helpful and clear. If not, then sorry. I tried.

What SoNin360 said, but HDD's are expensive now for various reasons, you picked the worst time to replace the 60GB. You could get something like a 500GB or 750GB if you wanted.

Hi, sorry to hijack the thread. What about free games I got from PS Plus? I can't re download them because the're not free anymore. Can I back these up and put them onto a new HDD? Thanks.

As long as you are still a plus member you will always be able to redownload any games that were offered for free with ps+, as long as you downloaded Them while they were free
