Allright so I just upgraded my tv finally - got a 1080P 40inch Sony Bravia. I have the Sony brand 1080p Component Cables - but was wondering if im getting the full potential of the system with that? or do I need HDMI cables? IS there a big difference between the two that would make it worth all that money? If anyone could give me a little insight on this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

You definitely want to get an HDMI cable. Component cable CANNOT carry a 1080p signal. HDMI is the only cable that will carry a true digital signal for you. Check out Amazon. You can get a good cable for $10 or less. Don't let companies like Monster trick you into buying an expensive cable, you will not be able to tell the difference.

Not true. composite video cables (a.k.a RCA jacks) can't carry anything over 480i. Component video cables carry 1080p, but using an analog signal. HDMI transfers pure digital signal ranging from 480i up to 1080p.

the only way to get full 1080p is with a HDMI cable. Component cables will only produce 720p or 1080i.

Yep. Price, for one. Like, buying a Bentley instead of a Smart. Someone may care, but who cares that they do?

HDMI is a digital signal, 1's and 0's, or in other words it either works or it doesn't work. There is no middle ground with HDMI.

If you did a little homework, you'd know that you were wrong. Component video is capable of carrying signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, and new high definition TV's support the use of component video up to their native resolution.

The component cables are better than this HDMI cable but HDMI is better if you get a cable capable of handling at least 900mb per second. The problem is most cables rated that high are expensive. I really suggest a good cable for the PS3 because Blu Ray movies and PS3 games tend to push around 700-900 mb per second so anything less you will be loosing information.

You really think there is not a difference between 5 or 6 1's and 0's and 5 billion 1's and 0's and dont think some just dont get through because you dont have a cable able to do it.

Component Cables are capable of 1080p, but very few tv sets can actually accept 1080p via component. So rather then risking it, Id just upgrade to an HDMI. Theres no way it could be any worse, thats for sure.

Also, dont the cheapest HDMI cable around, but monster cables are ridiculously over priced. Id get a good 35 dollar cable.

the reason 1080p is not supported through component cables has nothing to do with the cables. its a little something called DRM. basically HDMI is a scam, they FORCE you to buy HDMI cable to get the full use out of your tv by blocking 1080p support on component. and by doing so they make it much harder to play pirated media. thats what HDMI is for. component is more then capable of carrying a 1080p signal and producing the same picture as HDMI. dont let ANYONE fool you into thining otherwise.

also to the fools thinking that a $180 monster HDMI will produce a better picture then a $30 HDMI from wall mart. well you need to do a little more reserch. basically you wasted your money.

The HDMI digital signal is just basicly a on/off signal hence 1's and 0's. The component signal is still a analog signal while it's being sent through the cable (just converted from the source to analog and back to digital at the recieving device such as a TV or any other digital reciever that has a built it converter). While HDMI never needs to be converted.

I seen what a cheap $10, even $50 HDMI cable could do on a 50" + plasma TV, and from that experience, there is a difference between the cheap ones and a $100 Monster HDMI cables. How foolish of you.

For those debating on whether the $ amount matters in purchasing HDMI cables, check CNet, CR, AVS forums or similar reputable sites. You'll find comparisons between name-brand (Monster) and generics. The consensus seems to be there is no difference in cables that don't go beyond 8'. Brand/quality do come into play on the very long cables but as for the more common, shorter ones...it's a wash. Don't believe me though, do your own research. :)
