How come they don't make as many RPG's like they used to?

Whats the deal with that? I only know 4 RPG's for PS3, Valkyria Chronicles, Eternal Sonata, Disgaea 3 and Dragon Age. Everything nowadays is FPSs, and even though they're good, I think we need more variety. I miss the old PSOne days. I don't know, just a thought, lol, I'm bored.

My theory? (Feel free to debunk by the way) With games becoming more and more expensive and intense to make, I think fewer companies are willing to shell out the resources to pumping out 60 and 70 hour games anymore. Especially now that full voice acting for NPCs has become the norm, it's becoming increasingly difficult to put together an RPG for today's market that would still hold up to the expected gametime of the past. That's my theory anways.

Last Rebellion and Altelier Rorona, as well as Star Ocean 4: international and White Knight Chronicles. End of Enternity/Resonance of Fate as well in the later part of the year. Things are turning around quick for this genre on PS3, starting in 2010.

It's expensive to make an RPG with today's technological standards, that's why DS is the number one RPG platform currently by far.

That makes me a sad panda too. It's a shame more devs don't move them to digital download services like PSN, where lower production value games are more widely acceptable.

I like RPGs but so many of them have the same cliche storylines... Maybe developers are unable to think of something new and not done to death to make an RPG about? /shrug

Coming up with an original story is no easy task.

What the PS3 needs is Tales of Vesperia.I know I'vebeen saying this a lot, but I don't know why Bamco refuses to localize the PS3 version. (It's already been released in Japan and it looks like it's not coming to the States.)

They probably are taking time to build entirely new engines for the current hardware and still are not done. A lot of the PS1 RPG's in the beginning were barely different than what was available on SNES. FF7 was the first game to really change th way RPG's were seen storwise. A lot of Japanese developers have been reluctant to jump on the newer hardware because the JP market is shrinking. The reason why all the RPG's are on PSP and DS is because those are the systems that lead in Japan.

I think the reason is because this generation of gaming has increased the number of resources to create a game, which developers have to put a lot of money and time to develop a game that seems current gen rather then last gen or dated if you will. Also if the company isn't careful with their money and projects that can lead to a failure, which can make the company go bankrupt. I believe that's why the RPG genre feels bare bones for consoles this gen.

I wonder if any JPN companies are working on an FPS game... I think that'd be interesting, to see a Japanese FPS.

There would be a whole lot more talking and a lot less shooting.

Actually, now that we're on the topic... The Co-Founder of Bioware had this to say about JRPGs...

I kind of agree with him.

I think your just use to all the JRPG of the past, but that was back when it was the money genre but that isn't the case anymore. There are a number of RPG and many coming next year, but they don't make the headlines that they use to, outside of the big names. Now the industry cash cow is the online shooter and the JRPG is on the decline especially with the pressure of the WRPG.

Because everyone whines that games need to be 1000 hours long to be worthwhile. So it takes longer to make them.
