I have been playing uncharted all day, im on ch 8. And every time i walk acros new areas, i am allwayes amazed about how good the textures look. I mean from diffrent types of break textures, water textures leaves, ground textures, all give this kind of pop look, that i have never seen in video games. yea gow had a lil of this but, not like uncharted. the hdr lighting is top notch, everry single thing in the game cast shadows. and there motion blur....my question is, how did nd do this. 256 of ram, but yet has better textures and graphics than anything on the 360, wii(lol), and ieven rivals crysis. then theres hdr lighting, i thought people here said that the rsx, are what ever its called couldnt do hdr at all. and then there 2x aa. with only 256 amount of ram, how did nd use the cell to do all of this. just a cxouple months ago people where saying other wise about the ps3 tech.

The textures themselves aren't that detailed or plentiful, but clever use of fantastic lighting and shaders makes the game look amazing.

I believe that the architecture of the PS3 allows the Cell and the RSX to share memory as needed through a separate pipeline. Each has 256MB of RAM, but it's not the same kind. I believe the RAM on the Cell is much faster than the RAM on the RSX. It leads to greater bandwidth between the SPU's, thus allowing the RSX to take back some of the RAM from the Cell.

I wonder how powerful the RSX is...I sometimes wonder if it is the weakest part of the PS3. It certainly isn't hyped up nearly the way the Cell Processor is...

I don't know how Naughty Dog did it, but they did it. The game looks spectacular overall. Especially the lighting effects and water. Animation is top notch as well. Naughty Dog has a complete package here.

Yes the PS3 has 512MB of RAM but it doesnt need to use it alot because it uses Blu-Ray which allows the PS3 to stream stuff without using the RAM or alot of the Cell.

The RSX is basically a 256mb 7800gtx, which CAN do HDR. Its just the 7800gtx CAN"T do HDR and AA at the same time though. I'm pretty sure Uncharted runs AA though, right? And it sure as heck seems to be running HDR. The 256mb XDR is connected to the Cell.

From what I've read, Uncharted is able to get those awesome textures because the whole level is not loaded into memory. It streams only the immediate area into graphics memory, which leaves alot more room for textures. They're apparently using the Cell's spu's to enhance the graphics before shipping it out to the RSX. Could be the gpu is handling hdr while Cell does AA, or vice versa.

Texture streaming. The developers of Ratchet stated that using texture streaming added 150mb of VRAM in each level. I assume Naughty Dog did something similar.

Gabe Newell may hate the PS3 however when he did mention the interesting concept of doing away with graphics cards entirely and haviong all tasks done over a number of cores, he was obviously talking about PC's with quad to 8 cores but the same concept applies.

Also some games dont need AA that much Crysis doesant its hardly noticable in the demo with it off entirely.

You know the thing that is weird though (or for some, exciting) a while back, if I'm not mistaken, either ND or Sony said that UNcharted only used about 20-30% of the system's capability.

Yep, texture streaming allows them to stream tons of really high detail textures in each level without using up allot of RAM but the thing about that is the actual game will be huge because of all these textures which explains why these games are on Blu-Ray. Now people know why games like Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, R&C: Future and Lair would not fit on a DVD-9. But, but, Blu-Ray isn't useful for games.... LOL

Yes the PS3 has 512MB of RAM but it doesnt need to use it alot because it uses Blu-Ray which allows the PS3 to stream stuff without using the RAM or alot of the Cell.

actually, it probably streams very little because when i play games, i only hear the disc inside spin during loading, not during play, just it spins once of twice every 10-15 seconds, it uses it's super fast ram and the harddrive. Just some of the many advantages of the PS3.

Yeah this is because they cache the data to the HDD and then stream it from there so the disk will only be read like once per level or something.

Here's a quick question...

Does the water in this game rival the water presented in Far Cry Instincts for 360? I like seeing 3-d water effects, and still to this day FCI looks sick on my plasma. If this game outdoes that then I'm gonna have to pick it up sooner than later.

i am a huge console gamer i prefer console games over pc games and the visuals are gorgeous but PLEASE DO NOT EVER compare the two games visually lol. Crysis on very high on my pc looks similar to real life with GREAT foliage only problem is its not playable lmao (silly Ea and unoptimized games) anyways Uncharted has a great graphics to playability ration especialllllly compared to crysis but please no fanboyism although crysis does have awesome water affects on the clothes.

That is because the 360 has 512RAM for anything. So it can handle about the same amount of gfx. However the PS3 has 50gigs on its side.

Though the PS3 has 256RAM for gfx it can match the 360 through streaming textures and the Cell as added RAM. Thus they are equal. Only prolem is that Blu-Ray is getting more layers (Thank you Hitachi) and thus puts the PS3 ahead. By offering the same if not better gfx and a hell of alot more disk space.

first off not most ... secondly the ones that do run poorly ie mass effect(horrible frame rate), AC(worst frame rate), cod4(worst frame rate, worst textures)check game trailers or gs review for proof

halo doesnt look much better the resistance if at all but has a great art ****br>the only games that rival uncharted on the 360 is mass effect... i think you need to take another look at gears of war... games like ghost recon too surpassed it ages ago

I don't know what TV you guys play games on or what you are smoking but I own a PS3 and a 360, I have played all the best game on both system and NO 360 game compares to Uncharted, R&C: Future, or HS graphics and textures.... Crysis may look better but you need a $10,000 super gaming rig to experience that game in all it's glory.

The ps3 may have 2 sets of 256 mb of ram but they cant be shared. thats why sony failed with the ps3.. the rsx can not pull ram out of the cpu's ram, and this is a prob because the cell at times doesnt need all that ram. so the rsx should pull from it, but because sony failed with it. it can not. this is the reason for poor frame rates and faded out look of games...

Bishop1310

Yet Uncharted looks better than any other console game out. Doesn't look like they failed to me.

Crysis may look better but you need a $10,000 super gaming rig to experience that game in all it's glory.jdt532

I own both as well, but I do think there are a couple 360 games that look better than HS. Uncharted and Ratchet are on a whole different level though.

[QUOTE="Nolan16"]PS3 has 512 ram i beleive and this system has a lot of power in it that makes things possible.Sony_92

Yes the PS3 has 512MB of RAM but it doesnt need to use it alot because it uses Blu-Ray which allows the PS3 to stream stuff without using the RAM or alot of the Cell.

You can stream from any format, be it CD, DVD, blu-ray, cartidge, etc.

Remember when you first bought your PS3, lets say it was the 60GB version and you looked at the system info and it said you have less than 60GB free space? This was before you saved one file, song, video, etc. to the HDD well that's probably because there's a certain amount of HDD space reserved for the PS3 OS and game caching. So don't worry there will always be enough space on the HDD for caching.

It says there is 55gb total... however that is like all media, 4gb is realy 3.6gb, 20gb is 18gb, etc. However.... I found there was still a few gb missing.

I just have a feeling that Sony is smart enough that they thought of this issue. Developers are making their games to take advantage of HDD caching in the PS3. I don't believe that someone can fill all the free space on the HDD and then these games are suddenly unplayable... I'm pretty sure that some space is reserved for the OS, game caching, etc....

Thanks for the input guys..I've always thought that that extra memory used up was only for the OS,but seems to be more than that...

what happened in the past when you filled a memory card? Did you start complaining or something? No. You erase the cache for some games and when you want to play them again you re-install it. As long as you keep your save its all perfect. Ppl this days are less smart

256 of ram, but yet has better textures and graphics than anything on the 360, wii(lol), and ieven rivals crysis. then theres hdr lighting, i thought people here said that the rsx, are what ever its called couldnt do hdr at all. and then there 2x aa. with only 256 amount of ram, how did nd use the cell to do all of this. just a cxouple months ago people where saying other wise about the ps3 tech.

xxgunslingerxx

Um..sorry to burst your bubble but most 360 games are looking exactly the same as Uncharted.

first off not most ... secondly the ones that do run poorly ie mass effect(horrible frame rate), AC(worst frame rate), cod4(worst frame rate, worst textures)check game trailers or gs review for proof

Sorry, I have to ask: do you ride on the short bus to school? AC runs at 30fps (same as uncharted) and COD4 runs at 60fps (twice as fast as uncharted). Uncharted looks very nice, but it's nothing the 360 can't do as well or even better. You obviously have no idea about technical stuff and simply add up numbers sony feeds you. So your car (console) goes faster (higher FPS) because it has a bigger tank (HD, Blu-Ray drive). I don't think so. Learn and understand before posting BS.

it has 512...tho it is seperated into 2x256 blocks. Also the ps3 can do hdr, just not at 1080. I don't know abotu lookign like the best thing ever. It looks nice. Casting real time shadows is not a big deal either. Most the thign you've mentioned are pretty standard current gen effts, they jsut have a good art team to make nice assets.
