Since Persona 3 was the first game in the series to make it over here (UK), I was wondering how the original holds up to the newer entries (since PSP games are region free, I have the option of importing it). I've heard that P3/4 changed quite a lot of things, so will I still enjoy this remake if I've become used to the style of gameplay seen in the more recent games?

Probably not. The game is a first-person dungeon crawler with extremely bland environments, repetitive dungeons, and extremely high encounter rate. It's nothing like P3/P4. No social stuff at all. I'm a huge fan of Persona and SMT and even I have not bothered with this game yet. When it drops in price significantly then I'll give it a whirl. I can't justify spending 40 dollars on a game that has a lot working against it.

I feel the same. I'll wait a bit as I still need to finish 4 and I hear it is not much like the newer style they have.

The only thing they changed to suit the more recent Persona games is the soundtrack. I'm near the end of the game and I don't think you should bother with it.

Do not expect any similarities TC. Persona 1 is very different from Persona 3 & 4. It is still a good game none the less I say give it a go.

It's nothing like them. Persona 1 is a dungeon crawler with an extremely high encounter rate. I think Persona 3 and 4 are two of the finest games I've ever played, but I've put about 5 hours into Persona 1 and haven't touched it in over a month. It's not a bad game, just nothing like the others.
