There's no set expiration date. They *will* die eventually - they are still machines. Likely the first things to go are the lasers going out (that's what is happening on mine). But fortunately that can be replaced. Tougher failures to repair are inevitable as well, though - mechanics in the disc drive, PSU burning out, fan burning out. In theory, components on the mobo can go as well - capacitors and the like do age. It's not unusual to have to replace capacitors on old '80s and early '90s systems. But those circuit board components are probably the least likely / last to go.

Same as above

My original PS1's laser is going out and can only play scratch free games but it has trouble even then. Luckily my ps3 can play ps1 games as well as my ps2.

I've already had to take my genesis in for repairs for the power plug on the back as it was loose and if you moved the console it would turn off.

I purchased my PS2 Fat at launch, it "died" ( actually the tray mechanism is what died ) last year, but I still use it, since it´s a fat I have it with a HDD full of games/ network adapter combo and still works flawlessly ( had to purchase new controllers, but generic PS2 controllers cost like $15 US so it´s not a problem ), so that makes it what ? ...... 16 years old.

Got a NIB PS2 slim to replace it when it finally hits the dirt ( who knows when that is going to happen ).

Depends on your model.

Mine died in four years. But I had an original JPN 15000_model, and they turned out to have short life-spans. Tried my best to save the dam thing, but ended up waiting and grabbing a launch day JPN 60GB PS3 to play PS2 games.

@dwtyoutube: Sadly no......nothing lasts forever and eventually the laser will go out or the capacitors will fail.

You can always get those replaced since those parts are pretty common, but if anything else goes you're in trouble.

Mines 14, a little noisey but still plays games & dvds. The best made console ever, no doubt.

If Terminator taught us anything, these machines eventually will die.

As others have pointed out, various components age.
