I use a router for playing online with the PS3. I have a good connection, but sometimes I get disconnected from games (Killzone 2 is a most recent example) Would this kind of stuff happen if I used an ethernet cable and had the PS3 connected directly into the modem?

A wired connection is more reliable than a wireless. Can't say how much more reliable because every situation is unique.

Wait...are you wirelessly connected to your router? If thats the case, hardwire into your router...not your modem. Physical connection is ALWAYS more reliable than a wireless. Either way though, go through your router.

Plug the ethernet cable into an empty slot on the router instead of one on the modem?

Yes, most routers have 4 empty slots.

Mine does too. I have a netgear Rangemax router and it has 4 ethernet ports on the back.

As long as you are close to the router then fine. Me i use wireless for my PS3 and wired on my computers. WIRED is always better than wireless because many things can interfere with wireless networks and cause your connection to drop randomly.

My rule of thumb is that if you can get a cable to it, run wired. I have close to 20 devices in my house all hard wired. The only thing that isn't is my stupid Wii because Nintendo was too cheap to put a regular NIC in it (and I'm not spending $20 for one either). Need any network advice, feel free to shoot me some questions. Its what I do everyday.

Assuming your signal strength is high and stable there's no reliability difference between the two connection types barring the occasional airplane tower that may cross between your router and PS3.

Ummmm......HUH?????? I don't understand. I have a router and my connection is wired. Or did you mean wireless router, but didn't say that? Either way, wired is better than wireless.

Wired is always better, however in my case I can't do it. I have a ****** wireless router and I always have 100% signal strength.

With cable i don't know , i can't have cable because im playing upstairs and my modem is downstairs.

but wireless is not bad , it's quite good.
