...or it could be a coincidence that your PS3 stopped reading Blu-Ray disks at the time you dropped it. Try other games.hazelnutman
You mean drop more blu ray discs and see if the Ps3 can still read them? Lol the level finally loaded for me but I don't know how much of a problem this is going to be later on in the game...
I'm just asking how often people have this problem. I know I'm not the only one who's ever dropped a PS3 disc.
Blu-ray discs are incredibly tough, don't believe me? Watch this video.
EDIT: Uhh..I can't link the video. Well to see the video go on youtube and type in Blu-ray stress test. It should be the one with some guy from Joystiq.
I think that tiny microscopic speck killed the entire game. I'm sitting here in the middle of a cut scene and I've been waiting for it to stop with the disc question mark symbol and it hasn't for the past 20 minutes. What do I do? What the **** do I do?

Theres nothing wrong with your Blu-Ray .. they are known to resist scratches better than anything else, and when they do have a scratch it can still read them no problem, it's your PS3 ..
actually i think i heard they dont hold up well to scratches, because the information is closer to the bottom surface (and remember MGS4 is Dual layered) than on normal discs, i could be wrong tho.FstBrk342
It is closer to the surface, however it's protected well.

You mean it's my brand new PS3 that I bought four days ago that I can play everything on, that just now, after I dropped my MGS4 disc, does not read discs?
I don't have any other discs to test this on.

Could be many things, but definately not the disk .. the PS3 is an electronic and even if you had it for a hour it could mess up man. Maybe when you dropped it on the ground something got on it, then transfered to your Reading Eye inside the PS3 drive and messed it up .. like I said could be lots of things but it isn't the disk ..
Well I wiped the disc off pretty good so I can't imagine anything damaging the eye. I exchanged for a new disc from where I bought it so I'm gonna test it out and see if everything's working fine.cheezisgoooood
Watch the video. You definitly can't do this with a normal DVD.
It's not the disc, it is your PS3. Blu-ray discs are more resistant than DVD's (that the 360 uses).

Well to put into perspective the disc I just took back never made it past the cut scene after the boss battle no matter how many times I tried it and beat the boss, whereas just now I beat the boss again and encountered zero problems with my new disc. It could be argued that since Metal Gear Solid 4 is a dual-layered disc, it's more sensitive than the blu ray disc that got smashed in that video. Whatever the case it was definitely the disc.
blu ray discs are alot thicker and stronger than dvd's i know first hand. When the dual shock 3's came out they were selling the old six axis and giving a game with it as a bundle.
I took lair because of the update controllers, the game is rubbish btw. I took it for trade in and they offered $10 so i thought it was not really worth it. Insted i thought i would test the durability of a Blu ray and trust me they are strong! LOL
