I don't think anyone really knows whether or not it'll hurt your system. Common sense would indicate 'No', that it shouldn't hurt your system; as it's not a modification-based "test": It's built in. That said, running any piece of equipment at its max all the time (or enough times) will shorten the lifespan.

Best advice: If you're concerned at all about it, don't do it - or wait until Sony has a release about it.

it's the 21st century, we have probes capable of measurin tempurature without having to rely on the fan speeds. this post is rediculous and the OP is just giving out bad information. the system IS overheating if the PS3 reports it, it's not going by the fan guages, it's going by it's internal thermometer which is pretty accurate.

intentionally overheating your system to get rid of "years" worth of dust (the system is barely 2 years old as it is right?) is a very bad idea. use a can of compressed air or a vacuum cleaner to clear the vents.

Well being that i am a major in the field of electrical engineering and technology, its seems that this would be a means for a sony tech or repair tech to quickly examine the operation of the cooling system..and it also seems to clean it while during so

I did it and it seemed like a fan cycle. At first it didn't do anything, but after 15-20 seconds the fans started. About every 5 seconds the fan speed increased until it reached what seemed to be full speed. I dont think the ps3 would overheat so fast from just turning it upside down. But if it is just a fan test and not just overheating, how would the ps3 recognize that it is upside down? Does the ps3 itself have sixaxis motion-sensing???? Either way I don't think it could have done much damage considering someone did a test by putting the ps3 in temperatures over 100 degrees fahreinheit for a week and nothing happened. I don't have a link to that but im sure people remember that.

From Crackle: PS3 60 Gig Fan Test

That guy is an idiot and has no proof that it's not overheating the system. I've seen videos of people who ran a PC CPU with no heatsink or fan, and within a few seconds it got fried due to the heat. In other words, PS3 can overheat quickly, so by having him say that it's not harming it, I highly doubt that.

Also, if he knew anything about PC's dust builds up on the fan itself and can't be removed without actual cleaning. Each fan blade will have dust stuck to it and no matter how fast it goes it's not going to come off unless it's physically removed. So "it gets all the dust out" is bogus.

I tried it out and It worked for me. I didn't cover the vent and I actually seen the dust come out from my PS3. I didn't wait for it to give me the overheating message though, I flipped it back around before it had the chance.

I'll probably do it every 3 or 4 months, I had mines for 7 months and it wasn't too dusty. I don't think it'll mess up my system, so I'm okay with it.

On one part I dont have proof. Im just giving people what they asked for. And on the second part you can clearly see the disclaimer at the end. I am not stating its not harming it by fact. I am stating i dont think it is harming it. Like i said do what you want. He asked for a video so I made it.

This all sounds like a bunch of junk to me...And considering the flood of threads about it, I'm inclined to believe this is not a good thing.
