how well is Blue RAY really doing against HD DVD

Does anyone really know how well Blue Ray is doing. First I hear that it's doing very well, but then I hear this report that Toshiba's HD DVD player holds 60% of the market. Which kinda concerns me that Blue Ray isn't doing as well as I thought it was. I'm really hoping that this time around Sony will really have a winning format on there hands. They definitely don't need another beta max fiasco to happen again.

That study is counting only stand alone players, so ps3's don't count. So 60% of them are HD-DVD players. That's not too bad for blu ray considering 40% is still going towards it.

Here is breaking news from Toshiba. It looks pretty bleak for HD-DVD which is good since Blu-ray is a better format with more capacity per disk anyway.

They're not- that "news story" had absolutely no merit. Even the original article in Chinese didn't even say Walmart was supporting HD-DVD (I would know- I live in China and asked some students to translate). The AVSforums may know media quality, but they clearly don't know how to read.

Well anything you see coming out this summer by Sony, Disney, 20th Century or Columbia will all be on Blu-ray exclusive. Movies by Dreamworks and Revolution will be both on HD DVD and Blu ray. The best movie HD DVD will get is Evan Almighty.

And that doesn't look like a great movie either

Blu Ray is winning in terms of Media units sold (movies, games, etc) but HD DVD player hold a better share of the market, too bad the only companies releasing HD DVD only are Universal, New Line, and Jenna Jameson. MOst other companies are either members of the BluRay association, or they're releasing on both formats.

Not to mention that the Computer Programming community is embracing BluRay as the next generation of Storage medium because of its huge Capacity and transfer speeds.

If we don't include the sales of Toshiba's cheap HD-DVD players then Blu-Ray is really kicking HD-DVD's butt. And it still is when we count all players on the market, not just the ones that Toshiba wants to aknowledge.

HD-DVD is all but dead now. Soon it will be joining Betamax, DVHS and DivX Discs in the hall of bones.

i would like to add to that list of good hd dvd movies the matrix ultimate collection... may not mean much to some but i love the trillogy and apparently WB isnt a fan of blu ray... thoe i heard they are going to release it later this yea on blu ray anyway so its not that big a dealSuperMario254

It's not so much that WB isn't a fan of blu-ray, they release on both. They are having some issues with the putting out of some of their titles on blu-ray, for technical reasons (just simplifying it, there's more to it than that), which is why the Matrix Trilogy, as well as several others hit HD DVD release first. WB has stated that any title released by them on HD DVD will also be released on blu-ray, period, just not always simultaneously.

Sony won't manufacture porn Blu-ray disks is what they said. They aren't stopping production altogether. Any other Blu-ray producing facilities are allowed to do porn. There are already a few porn movies on Blu-ray.

Just wished that The Matrix was out on BR already. I was bummed that it wasn't. Does anyone know whether the PS3 can update the BR capabilities? Like adding inPicture in Picture? I hear that's why the Matrix wasn't made for BR cause it didn't have that functionality.feryl06

HD DVD Camp Claims Victory in Stand-Alone Player Sales

While Blu-ray still dominates the market with over 3.6 million PS3s sold, the HD DVD camp says that when it comes to stand-alone players, HD DVD has outsold Blu-ray by a 50% margin.

In a press release this morning, the HD DVD Promotions Group announced that it has sold 150,000 stand-alone HD DVD players, accounting for 60% of the total market for standalone high-def disc players. Backing out of those numbers, it would seem that by comparison 100,000 standalone Blu-ray players have been sold.

Of course, counting the PlayStation 3, there are still twenty times more total Blu-ray players on the market, but the HD DVD camp claims a significantly decreased "attach rate" (the number of discs owned per player) for the PS3 vs other dedicated disc playback devices.

This morning's announcement comes three weeks into Toshiba's most aggressive HD DVD sales campaign yet. In mid-May, the manufacturer began offering a $100 instant rebate on its entry-level HD-A1 HD DVD player, which has seen the price for that player drop to increasingly bargain basement rates as low as $199 at some retailers).

Toshiba has said plans to extend the $100 instant rebate to all of its HD DVD player models this week.

"Toshiba's latest promotional efforts are clearly resonating with consumers and showing that price is king when it comes to hardware," said Craig Kornblau, chairman of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group. BD-J is the platform for which the software on each Blu-Ray disc is made with. all the user-interface stuff and interactivity is to run through BD-J.

Who cares if one wins or not. Most of the people in the US could care less. You see Amazon sales of the HD DVD of Planet Earth at #4 on Amazon. Then you hear sales figures for Blu-Ray. Downloading will more than likely be the wave of the future.
