Im currently looking into buying a PS3 and would like to know the ins and outs of online play. Also do you guys use wireless or wired, and what is the reason. Im asking this because Xbox Live is at top notch its just that the console is, you know, eh.

So lets hear some opinons and thoughts. Thanks.

online is freakin great for being free

more than what i thought but then again i was satisfied with the way the PS2 did online

i dont really care for paying for my internet then paying to use it on my console, thats basically like paying to be allowed to pay for your internet LOL (over-exaggeration)

i personally use wireless because the modem and router are in my 2nd bedroom while my PS3 is in my living room

works perfectly so when my wife is on the computer she is not trying to show me all this usless stuff and distracting me LOL

First party games tend to have the strongest online setup, while the third party developer servers are a mixed bag. Resistance and Warhawk run lag-free, or in the few cases of lag I've seen it was only notable because it's not usually there.

The only thing Xbox Live has over PS3 online right now is the ability to communicate with all your friends in game. The functionality is in the PS3, because Resistance was eventually upgraded to the point where it allows this feature. Until this is unlocked and standardized it is a little more of a hassle to talk to your friends while playing a game (you have to exit to the operating system). Also, some features like voice chat are not standard because for some reason developers do not put them in every game.

Other than the minor issue of no in-game XMB the online is fantastic. Haters will tell you otherwise - don't believe them.

Edit: Also, I have mine hooked up to the router via CAT-5 cable. I hear the wireless works quite well, but I just don't trust a wireless connection as much as a wired one for my gaming.

DSL should work fine with no lags unless you are streaming porn in the next room.

LOL

Online is free what more do u want.

But really its great. I use a Buffalo wireless router thats probably 5 feet away and get excellent connection. The only problem i get is that there a lot of lag due to it being connected to my College Campus's network. But thats only around the afternoon when i should be in class.

I get no lag at my parents house during breaks. Same router, but its more like 50 feet plus a floor up. Although some how it got fried

I could care less about talking to all my friends with XMB.I would rather not have it. Why would I want a message from someone while I'm in the middle of a huge gunfight in Warhawk or Call of Duty 4 that could determine ifI win or not.

Besides Home is coming. Which will only make PSN better

I have my PS3 and a laptop running at the same time all the time off the wireless set-up (sometimes there sitting almost side by side because I am using some walkthroughs for some games that I get stuck in). And it never has any lag using a DSL IP.

Same here. Although i think someone got into my access point b/c theres always messages poping up saying other computers are connected to it. Even with an encription password on it.

Ive never had a problem with my old NetGear Wi-Fi G before. and then later the year I switched to a new LinkSys Wi-Fi N, worked fine playing online games, but it didnt let me chat in the chatroom becuz of the firewall builtin... so get a Wi-Fi G or the one without a firewall builtin. if not just pluggin the wired one.... but let me tell you the PSN chatroom is way better than the XboxLive chatroom. trust me on this one.

I have DSL (100MBPS.) Will this be adequate enough to play online as far as lag or blotchy connections?

dude dont worry about lag ,the guys above told you the games are running on special servers so there will be minor to no lag , mostly no lag , and yeah theres no DSL as 100MBPS thats a cable ,you can check your speed here www.speedtest.net , and yeah i have 1 MBPS DSL connection that sucks the monkey @** but im still playing good games on the laggy XBL service , so if 1MBPS is enough anything above that will be cool, the faster the better.
