Try standard cables. Maybe the HDMI connection is a bit fuzzy or the wire is screwed up.

Are each and every cable plugged in all the way? That happens to me alot, check the back of the PS3 it might be loose. Or maybe your cable might be broken, I would try new cables before blaming it on your PS3.

it's not working on a different tv, i would try different hdmi cables but there so expensive and i only have one, i have a feeling there is something wrong with the ps3 because i can't get remote play to work and if it were just a lose cable that wouldn't be affected, i want to try and take the hdd out and try starting it up, but i cant budge the screws. it seems like the system is still running, i wonder if there is a way i can still restore the default settings.

Try a different TV using the AV cables that the PS3 came with. When the PS3 is in standby mode, hold the power button (in the front) for about 10seconds and it'll restore default video/sound settings. If you can get your PS3 to work on a different TV using AV cables, then go to your HDTV and use the AV cables. If it works from that point, then try the HDMI cable again.

Did you set the PS3 display output to HDMI? Because if it is set it to say scart and you connect it with an HDMI you wont get any display and vice versa
