Suddenly my ps3 stop functioning right, the menu bar wasn't shown completely and after selecting a video or picture i receive a corrupted message. The worst part, all my save files from the last 4 years are lost. I tried doind a system restore and now after booting up i just receive a blue screen saying the data is corrupted, to repair press X. After that the screen stays blank and the harddrive light turns off.

Using safe mode i selected both restore options and the one to format the drive then the screen stays black or i receive the blue screen message. When this happens the Harddrive light turn off.

Yep, option 5 formats the PS3 so sounds like you either have a bad connection to the hard drive, the hard drive is bad. You can try re-formatting it on your PC but it's a pain to do and don't know how to do it off the top of my head. There are some youtube videos on it. If your not real familiar with utilities for PC, I'd suggest taking somewhere to repair. You can find some repair on Craiglist, some game stores repair PS3's too. If it's under warranty, call Sony. Bummer about your PS3.

Either of these 2 Western Digital or Seagate. I prefer Seagate.

It runs slightly hotter with 7200 RPM. The speed difference is not much faster with 7200 RPM on the PS3. Up to you. Playing safe is 5400 RPM but many say 7200 RPM is fine.
