Why am I hyping Killzone for PS3 when the first Killzone for PS2 didn't live up to expectations?

Well thats easy, back then Guirrilla were a relatively new company who came from a PC background, they showed a picture of an oil rig to Sony which they created and looked remarkbly realistic. Sony immediately struck a deal with them to make an FPS exclusive to PS2. When Killzone was shown it looked really good but unfortuantely the media went crazy and started hyping the game as a Halo Killer, thus began Killzone's downfall. PS2 was alot weaker then the Xbox, this time PS3 is a little if not alot more powerul then the 360. Killzone for PS2 had alot of glitches because Guirrilla tried to push PS2 to its limits which didn't quite work but then it was their first venture into making a game for a console.

Sony acquired Guirrilla in 05 seeing the potential of Killzone on the PS3, Sony are investing alot of time, money and man power in creating the ultimate console FPS, seeing Sony's track record of creating amazing games I expect Killzone to be nothing less.

So basically I think that Killzone will ROCK becaue I have faith in Sony plus I have a strong gut feeling :D

Chris Ivester recently stated in an interview: "With Killzone, the expectation internally and externally is very high - and I won't show it until it's going to exceed people's expectations. It will be next year before we show it again, but it's coming along very well. The teams are working very hard, they know exactly what they have to do and there's no doubt they will achieve it, but there's nothing to be served by something that doesn't satisfy my goals for the project. I can tell you, though, that some elements already exceed the trailer."

It should be noted that developers don't tend to say "Yeah, my game is crap on a stick" when discussing their game --- so his vow to not release until it exceeds people's expectations is a bit laughable.

personally Killzone is my favorite shooter right after R:Fom, it was definetly ahead of its time, but the reason i think that it failed was that it was hyped as "Halo Killer" which no game can really kill Halo, or GTA or MGS or any of the huge game franchises.

the great thing about it is that now they don't have such huge expectations they can really polish this game into something great, i have faith that this could be one of the greatest shooters ever.  not to mention one of the best online games ever.

I dont know why everyone hypes a shooter for the CONSOLE. If you want the best shooters, get a job and by a PC. The home of the best shooters EVER. If there is any gamer who disputes this, you A) have never played a competive shooter on the pc before B) cant buy a good PC.

A lot of you had some great comments.

I wouldn't hype this game too much because we still know too little about it. The fact that we don't know much could be extremely good or bad in the same respect as GTAIV (We don't know much about it, but historically GTA has always rated high). It's either the game doesn't live up to the trailer, and the trailer was a tool for hyping the game up, or the game will far exceed expectations.

In general, a lot of the games that are in development for the PS3 all look so amazing its hard to believe that it will be the finished product. To be honest, I know the PS3's specs, and it can definitely be handled on the console (fully-rendered). But do graphics really make the game?

Let's hope that they focus as much on gameplay as on graphics, cause that's what is going to make a great experience.

azuroc
This is probably the best post in the topic. I think the game is going to be pretty good & don't really care if it scores AAA or AA as long as it's fun. It's pretty silly to peg the game as 'the best fps' or as 'crap' before we've even seen ANY gameplay footage though. I'm just looking forward to finding out more on the game.

Killzone actually wasn't a bad game... not even according to the reviews. Killzone Liberation was pretty awesome. So your negative attitude towards this title seems a little trollish. Who hopes for a game to be bad??? This is how your attitude comes off.

Well since Guirilla came from PC, it was hard for them to do work on the much inferior ps2. Not only now have they gained enough experience, but a lot of money and time is being invested in this one. It won't fail, that's for sure.

I have very low expectations for this title. It's so far exactly like the original: Amazing visuals, nothing more, nothing less. Killzone 2 can impress me very easily over the horrid original, but it will take a great deal to conquer the console champ known as Halo:Combat Evolved. Not even Halo 2 conquered Halo: Combat Evolved in my eyes. Trust me, the last thing this game needs is to be overhyped....AGAIN.

i hope they keep the multiple characters like the last game, really added depth to when you replayed the levels.  But the story would have to be different for each character so  that might not work :(

In an interview this guy did say that some parts of Killzone already exceed that CGI trailer which I 100% agree that it probably does considering how much attention Sony is putting in Killzone -money, man power and resources- I bet if Sony shown Killzone like 2 months ago then everyone would be gobsmacked at how good it looks but Sony and Guirrilla don't want to flaunt the game at every oppertunity to get it hyped like CRRRAZY, they don't want to repeat the mistake they did last time. Instead of hyping the game Sony/Guirrilla are spending that time to refine the game and make it the ultimate FPS on PS3.

My guess is that the beast will be unleashed E3 07, July 11-13 8)

According to gamerankings.com, in the history of the PS2 (which did not have a wealth of good FPS), Killzone was the 28th best reviewed game out of 50. So, no, it was not terribly good by the reviews.

I've said that Half-Life 2, almost without a doubt, will be the best FPS the PS3 will hope to see (it is an amazing title). Killzone is a mediocre franchise without a really good game under its name, so calling it the best console FPS out there is silly.

Call me crazy but I have alot of faith in Sony for the creation of Killzone for the PS3. Sony probably have the greatest first-party titles compared to other companies, every game they have made they have excelled on that particular genre.

Gran Turismo is a the greatest racing game ever and the biggest selling game of last generation.

GOW is one of the most amazing action/adventure game which has set a very high standard for other action games to follow.

Ico is one the most beautiful and enchanting game which inspired alot of game makers as well as games.

Shadow of the Colossus is one the most fantastic and original game to ever to grace a console.

You see, Sony have made some really landmark videogames which are just fantastic to play as it is to watch. I feel that Sony are very passionate about Killzone, sure its PS2 outing was not all that but that was because it was Guirrilla's first game plus they tried to make a game which required alot more power then what PS2 had. The reason Sony bought Guirrilla was because they had full confidence that Killzone would be one of the greatest if the not greatest console FPS ever and now with the PS3 they have enough power to create their true vision of killzone.

Guirrilla have already said that the main focus on Killzone for the PS3 is going to be multiplayer which is awesome considering this is what everyone looks for when they buy an FPS, although I would expect the game to have a fantastic singleplayer as well as lush visuals and amazing AI.

Since the Killzone CGI trailer which was shown 2 years ago Sony and Guirrilla have been extremely secretive about this game, I believe that these last 2 years - plus I'm sure Guirrilla have been experimenting with PS3 hardware before E3 05- Guirrilla have been trying really hard to understand how the PS3 architecture works while making the game at the same time.

Sony has invested alot of time, money and man power into the developement of Killzone so I believe that they are very VERY dedicated and serious about Killzone, Sony wants Killzone to meet their expectations before they show it to the public, heck its stated that some parts of the game already exceed that infamous CGI video which sounds awesome considering how amazing that CGI vid was.

I am 100% confident that once Sony unveils Killzone it will be the BIGGEST surprise of the year, the game will exceed everyones expectations and will get an average score of atleast 9.4 if not more when it gets released.

I have a feeling that Killzone 2 will actually get AAA on GameSpot

Gameplay = 9

Graphics = 10

Sound = 10

Value = 9

Tilt = 10

Total = 9.4 :D

Considering this will be Sony's title which will showcase PS3's strengths I have no doubt that it will look, play and sound fantastic plus the online multiplayer will be out of this world which will make the replay infinate. Also since this game will feature land, air and sea battles surely it will be one of greatest FPS to ever grace a console.

2 years, Killzone has been in developement for 2 years and I guarantee all the money, resouces and man power is put to good use. Sony are dead serious about killzone so it will not fail.

Games that showcase PS3 computational and visual prowess will arrive before this (LAIR, Motorstorm) but this one is still garnering a lot of hype despite the criticism of the 1st game. That just goes to show that this franchise has lots of consumer interest. If it was not interesting we would'nt be talking about it right now. The resources are being spent to make sure this game is a global success. Only people who don't own the system, or fans of the competition, will downplay the enormity of this game.

well I guess we will see Killzone sooner than later with a trailer which is going to be released next week and a possible playable demo in may.

We will finally see if Killzone is worth the wait and if Sony's investment in Killzone payed off. the Guys at Guirrilla are saying that it has exceeded the trailer, thats awesome but we'll be the judge of that :)

That is one fun game.

It takes everything great about the original, removes all of the problems, and puts it into a third-person isometric shooter.

Best PSP game, in my opinion.

The original game actually sold very well, despite having a good deal of "flaws".

It is actually the most selling game in quite a few Eastern European nations, when last I checked, and sold well enough here in the US to get Greatest Hits status.

I'm not optimistic about KZ2.

This is just based on my opinion of KZ1. Also there is that bad stigma from the CGI trailer from a few years ago.

Both are solid games (although I find Killzone to be a much better one) but they wouldn't blend well together, at all.

The sequel will not be appreciably better.

makingmusic476

Mike...get a grip on it man.. Did you just build yourself a time machine? No? Then is there any insight you could give me into your opinion here?

It seems rather slanderous at first glance...seeing as you haven't seen the game or taken part in its development.

The biggest problem with the first game was the framerate....that's kinda it...I mean it wasn't outstanding but you said it was "crap" man that just isn't true. If the game was outright awful then there wouldn't be interest in this studio or the multi-million dollar title that they're working on

Feel free to explain where the "slander" is. If you think Killzone 1 was amazing, not being appreciably better doesn't make it bad, right?

YOU have no idea what the game is like, either. The first game was bad. The PSP game, also, was bad. Sorry, but the sequel does not get benefit of the doubt.

As for the first one being crap --- yeah, it very much was crap.
-=Mike

The Killzone: LIberation for the psp was NOT bad. It got an 8.3, and would've gotten even higher had it had online multplayer and a longer campaign.

I love quotes like this, "It would have gotten a better score if it were a better game." Very funny stuff. I think killzone has a chance to be a great game, but it will not equal the cgi trailer in graphics its just not possible. Personally I hope its a TPS with a cover system. That would be sweet.

this is sony's second chance at de-throning microsofts shooter, and i think sony realizes whats at stake here (hence the 120 developers and the current $20 million budget) they want to make sure that this is truly the shooter to beat, especially with all the super high "next-gen" expectations. i expect it to be a good game, hopefully it will be one of the best fps's out there. i thought that the first one was sometimes poorly designed(weird clipping issues,poly seams,low res textures,objects popping in) but overall a pretty good game, the online multiplayer is still really fun too.

killzone wasnt half ass bad as people say it was. It was pretty fun to play but wasnt horrible. Even tho its not the greatest its still was a great game. I dont noe wahts all the hype about HALO. I played halo and i dont noe whats good about it ? i dont noe why so many people think its the greatest fps ever. To me its a regular game. PC has the best fps ever and i Thank Counter-Strike for that. Prolly the game that started the team basted fps genre.
