I was under the impression that ALL PS3 games were 1080p...

But today at gamespot I looked at the back of some PS3 boxes and most of them only said 720p with only a few being 1080i. What gives? Why aren't there any games on the ps3 that support 1080p? What's the point of HDMI then? Yes I do understand that even in 720p HDMI looks better than component but usually in order to get 1080p you need to use HDMI. Even the 360 supports 1080p now.

P.S. I'm not flaming. I plan on getting a ps3 soon.

I don't get it. What was the point of your thread? You've already answered your own question; No, not all PS3 games run at 1080p.

It's cause many devs haven't gotten used to 1080p and can't get a good frame rate with it. If you have a 1080p tv, it would automatically upscale anyways

It's the resolution your display runs at: 720p = 1280x720 (although most 720p displays are actually 1366x768.) 1080p = 1920x1080

Last time I checked, 360 doesn't really have any game that runs in 1080p at all beside some arcarde titles.. If you mean that all xbox games gets upconverted to 1080p? well, PS3 does that as well :/

They deal with the amount of pixels. 1080p is 1920 by 1080 while 720p is 1200 by 720. That means 1080p is obviously clearer than 720p

That 46" Samsung is a sweet display. I've watched Spiderman 3 on it and nearly crapped myself. However, despite what some other owners would say, I find that most X360 and PS3 games look better on my Sony 32" XBR4 LCD. It's a 720p display which will accept a 1080p feed via hdmi and has the 120hz feature (as does the Samsung). Blu-ray movies look equally 3-dimensional on the 46" Sammy and 32" Sony, but games (and movies) look just a slight bit sharper and more 3-d on my Sony versus just about every 40"+ display I've seen.

Opinions vary... and I'm sure many will disagree, but I gave you mine.

PS3 has a few 1080p native games -> mainly sports games though.

Lots of games support 1080i however they do not mention it on the box due to the fact that the game is 720p and will only upscale to 1080i if you TV cannot handle 720p (but can handle 1080i).

Also just to let you know 360 only has 2 native 1080p games as far as i know, however 360 does have an upscaling chip which allows for games to be upscaled to 1080p. Also keep in mind Halo 3 is its own unique resolution which is BELOW the HD mark -> its 640p i believe ... now Halo 3 still looks amazing which makes a great example to use to show how resultion while important isn't the only factor when looking at graphics.

As to WHY games arn't often 1080p native, its due to the processing power required to run games in 1080p, PS3 has that power but unless the devlopers take advantage of the CELL then framerates WILL suffer and therefore devlopers have been choosing a better frame rate over 1080p native (low HDTV penatration is also a factor).
As to why 360 games arn't often 1080p its due to the same reasons as PS3 and ALSO DVD's limited capacity. 1080p textures require ALOT more space than 720p textures as a result devlopers are again choosing to simply make games 720p (which looks just fine anyway).

xbox 360 almost every game you see 1080p/i but it only means it upscales 720 to 1080. on the back of the ps3 games it tells you the NATIVE resolution the game runs at usualy it's 720p for games like uncharted and ratchet but these games can very well upscale to 1080p. if a game says 1080p like nba 2k8 it means that you can truely play it at that resolution. no upscale. I am not saying when 360 games have 1080p they are fake but normaly every 360 game says that.

Just to let you know, all 360 games have to be upscaled to 720p,1080i, or even 1080p. 360 owners can never get true high def. The reason for that is the disc. PS3 uses blue ray, the 360 uses a dvd9 disc. And its up to the developer to make a game 720 or 1080. Games like jericho, cod4, lair, ninja gaiden are 1080p. Once developers get used to making ps3 games I'm sure we will start seeing more 1080p games.

What's the point of having HD dvd's and Blue Ray dvd's than. Why not just put an HDMI output behind every dvd player. Dude trust me it matters. I have a regular dvd player that has an hdmi output, and all the movies that I watch on it are upscaled. IT MATTERS.

Are you talking about games or movies? Games being in HD has absolutely nothing to do with the media the game comes on. Hell the PS2 could do 1080i. Movies well of course it matters but this thread is about gaming.

The storage medium has absolutely nothing to do something being HD or not. However, a movie in HD would not be able to fit on a normal DVD, there's too much data. This is where Blu-ray and HD-DVD come in; there's more space to hold this data.

Cell's right about this. HDMI matters for HD content, but if you think any content on DVD can only output to 480p and has to be up scaled then you are wrong. Games on DVD has nothing to do with what kind of resolution it is supposed to be out put at. Take Quake 3 for example, it merely fit a CD, but the game can run up to 2560x1920 if your hardware can support the resolution. Video is a fixed content. Games however are just type of program. Trusting you would make me believe that since Windows XP comes on a CD its resoultion probably won't be greater then 640x480. And that simply isn't true.

Um, yes it matters on the AMOUNT of HD content but not if they are able to perform HD. Movies on your dvd player are at a resolution of 720 by 480 usually and that's why your player has to upscale. Now, it doesn't mean that DVD can't hold HD; it just means that DVD's are not able to hold full movies in HD because of the lack of storage. That's where HD DVD and Blu Ray comes in.

It would be nice to see more devs use 1080p especially since the companies like Sony and Microsoft like to advertise so much that these systems support this format. Lets cross our fingers for DMC4 and MGS4!!

HDMI gives you picture and sound over one cable. The 360 upscales the games to 1080p thats not the same as true 1080p.There are more ps3 games that run at true 1080p than 360. Alot of games have a lower resolution than what the box says they are not going to put 640p they willput 720p.

You can put HD on a DVD, idiot. The format just determines how much space and the read rate. You could make a console that read off of ps2 memory cards and have 1080p. (Although the games would only be 8mb...) Also, CoD4, is 720p, and I think Jericho is too. (Lair and NGS are 1080p though)

The storage medium has absolutely nothing to do something being HD or not. However, a movie in HD would not be able to fit on a normal DVD, there's too much data. This is where Blu-ray and HD-DVD come in; there's more space to hold this data.

yes the disc is the reason, note HALO3 even COD4 run at 640p, 600p bc of limited dvd space, DVD cant fit HD resolutions on the disc! why cant u get it through your head, and dont give me pc gaming does...blah blah crap pc resultions and HDtv resolutions are different!

no... most games are 720P. it takes huge amounts of power to make complicated game run in true 1080P. Most 1080P games are forced upscaled even.

true 1080p is just for simple games this gen... and GT5 appearently

Last time I checked, 360 doesn't really have any game that runs in 1080p at all beside some arcarde titles.. If you mean that all xbox games gets upconverted to 1080p? well, PS3 does that as well :/solaris1979

Isn't Halo 3 1080p?
At least it says it is on the back of the box.

1080p = 1920x1080 pixels
720p = 1280x720 pixels

This is a huge resolution difference. Even on high-end PCs, modern games lag on 1080p.

Lobster_Ear

The thing about it is that PS3 can do 1080p with just hardware (that's all the hype), however devs need to make games that run in 1080p.

A better example would be Super Stardust HD. That game would probably fit on a normal CD, and it's in 1080p.

It's up to developers to have their games run in 1080p or not. Both consoles can do it.

[QUOTE="redskins2156"]What's the point of having HD dvd's and Blue Ray dvd's than. Why not just put an HDMI output behind every dvd player. Dude trust me it matters. I have a regular dvd player that has an hdmi output, and all the movies that I watch on it are upscaled. So CoD4 on the ps3 Blu-Ray disc doesn't have room for HD content? The disc has nothing to do with HD in terms of gaming, which is completely different when it comes to movies which store ALOT more data.

[QUOTE="gamenux"]Not all 360 games supports 1080p and few too... LittleYoshi

1080p is what Blu-ray support.....360 can't do that! Just cause it says in the box doesn't mean it right...cause I found errors in game boxes before....(ex. it said 16 player online, when it was 24 players online...or this game runs 1080i, when it only runs in 720p)

Ummm, you're compltely wrong. 1080p has zero to do with the storage medium, it's just a resolution. BTW, Virtua Tennis 3 and NBA Homecourt are native 1080p on 360...

ARGHHHHHHHH, READ MY OTHER COMMENT:

You can put HD on a DVD. The format just determines how much space and the read rate. You could make a console that read off of ps2 memory cards and have 1080p. (Although the games would only be 8mb...)

This is what I hate about fanboys..

WHAT ARE U TALKING ABOUT!!! What ur saying is like saying u can play a gameboy in a pool

It's cause many devs haven't gotten used to 1080p and can't get a good frame rate with it. If you have a 1080p tv, it would automatically upscale anywaysaaron6581230

Umm thats not really true...The truth is if your tv supports 1080p but your game isnt running on 1080p then its going to show all the flaws in the games...Games look really unappealing without an HDMI cable...But no as you figured out they are not all 1080p but they are getting there...COD4 is so if you want a good example there is one. And it looks faboulous..
