Sucks because I wanted to play some more Deathspank before work, well the old girl gave me quite a few years of fun, guess it was time to kick the bucket, though losing my saves is the most annoying part.

HOW TO GET ALL OF YOUR DATA ONTO A NEW PS3 FROM A YLOD PS3 AND DRINK A COKE

  1. Buy a heat gun from a store with a generous return policy.
  2. Buy some thermal paste from any computer store. It should cost no more than 5-10 bucks.
  3. Download this PDF guide and have the companion YouTube vids on standby.
  4. Fix the damn thing.
  5. Buy a new PS3, preferably a new slim.
  6. Use the data transfer utility while your old PS3 is temporarily alive.
  7. Return heat gun, buy yourself a can of Coca Cola.
  8. Drink the Coca Cola.

I did the above steps, and everything worked out.

Thanks a ton for that link, sadly I'm at work, and dunno where I can get a heat gun, whatever that is, though I'll look around, if it can be a perma fix that'd be awesome, if not, I definitely want to grab my saves for sure, I'd rather just buy a new damn ps3 then get a refurbished.

A heat gun is like a hairdryer that Tim Allen "fixed."

In case you are too young to ge tthe reference, it's just like a hairdryer that blows out heat 10x hotter. It is used for shrinkwrapping and melting plastic and other things. Any hardware store (homedepot/etc) should have one.

You don't have to worry about wrecking your ps3 any worse cause its already toasted. Honestly though, I know people who followed that guide and now their ps3 has been working since. I don't think you should buy a new ps3 until you see if that fixes it. You also need to buy heatsink compound from a computer store. It's not that expensive under 10$.

A majority of yellow lights of doom are from the system overheating. Is your ps3 in some kind of shelf? If it is you should really bring it out into the open where it is open on all 4 sides.

Ya, I watched the youtube guide that I plan on following and looked around at what stores might have some heat guns, my ps3 is on a corner table all by its lonesome other then controllers with it, so I don't think it was a heating issue, I'll give it a shot at turning it on when I get home, got it completely unplugged when I left, ya, I don't really see any downsides to trying to fix it myself any how, already waaaay past the warranty so, I'd rather pay 40 or however much for the dryer on steroids and 10 or so for compound, much more efficient then 150+ for a refurbished console, ugh.

Besides if I were going to pay that much I would rather get a brand new one.

Fixed my old ps2s when it came to the unable to read blue disc errors so this shouldn't be too hard, though more difficult but I think I can handle it since I build my own pcs. 8)

DO the cheap move and do the fix and pawn it off to a game store. If anyone is silly enough to buy it then they deserve a ylod after a month on it. Never ever ever buy a used 60Gb it's almost guarenteed to be temp fix.

people might try to advertise the heat gun fix as permanent, but rest assured it is most definitely not.. i would say 1-2 months is most likely.

8 months - That's just ridiculous. Well, at least you're under warranty. Mine died two months ago after 2.5 years and had just recently bought a new Slim 250. The reason this happens is because they use the unleaded solder, and obviously an inadequate cooling system. I am in the process of filing a FTC report though. If you live in the US, do the same. An 8 month long life span is not acceptable and companies should be held accountable.

My 60 gb died on Wed. sad times. Got a 120 slim on friday though. Only reason i took apart my 60 is cause my game was still in it, i will most likely find someone around this city to fix it or send it to sony.

That sucks man. My first ps3 was a launch and I never had a problem with it. I wound up selling it because I was desperate for cash at the time. Months later I bought a refurbished one and am still using it to this day. Haven't had a problem with either PS3 yet. *Knocks on wood*

Sorry for your loss, you've made me slightly paranoid about my slim now since it's about 7-8 months old as well! I don't know why people keep saying things like "The slim cannot get the YLOD" - of course it can, there are plenty of videos on youtube to back that up.

Haha hell no she's never hot , I remember when I played oblivion in long sits that it would heat her up , but recently I've been playing a lot of transformers and I didn't notice any heat on her surface.

doesnt the yellow light mean just mean a faulty connection from the harddrive to the motherboard or a corrupted hard drive? Also some people have formatted their harddrives and had success of having it back. If that does not work, go buy a 640gb 2.5" HDD and you can save yourself from buying a new PS3.

90% of YLOD are caused by the circuits on the motherboard (most notably the circuits between the CPU and GPU) being disconnected because of essentially "holes" in the solder. Because Sony produced fat PS3s with incredibly low-quality solder and cooling gel, the PS3 in response eventually gets so heated up that the crappy solder holding the motherboard together begins to undergo a heating and cooling process too many times until the circuit gets cold. The heat gun method - while temporary - fully melts the solder and allows it to be "reflowed". The reason why this is temporary and will continue to only get worse is that solder loses its conductivity the more you heat it and let it cool. Also, the PS3 YLOD could fully be fixed if the entire motherboard was re-soldered, but that is pretty much impossible given how many circuits and different components are on it.

Just cant beat big business. Sony cleary gave me a bogus PSP after paying $98 to get it repaired.
