If youve seen the pics of the system up close that were posted on the forums, you would realize that it was abused and neglected. I take extra special care of my unit. Its the kids fault. Sony has every right torefuse repair

OMG...I bet he is a MS employee and he literally left that in Gobi desert for a week. And MS paid FOX news to have that interview to make it look bad...seriously, the RROD should make it to the news not that messed up douchbag.

I know that Sony shouldn't be so stingy on that because they did replace my store's rental PS3, but that guy claimed that Sony said it's harzard is obvious a lie to make people hate Sony and sympathsize him, and anyone who owns a PS3 know that PS3 is very durable, no way it breaks down by measly dust. Juding from that picture, it's obvious that it's no dust, more like dirt!

What is up with you people and thinking that microsoft pays off everyone. Seriously grow up. Fox news has always been trash imo but enough with the microsoft pays off this person or that company etc. Its getting really lame.

do you know how strong the media's influence is and how easily they can manipulate the facts?

God damn. After seeing the picture of the dusty PS3, I laughed. He seriously sent it in for Sony to fix? His room must be a mess. Take responsibility for your actions (or inaction in this kid's case), and don't expect someone to fix the problem you could have prevented by taking a few seconds out of your busy schedule to dust your own PS3. This is why FOX News will never be a respectable news media outlet.

My question why didn't he ever clean his PS3. He saw dirt was getting on it, and he never took any responsibility to clean his stuff. It's not Sony's fault for his problems it is his own.

That kid is a pig and I feel sorry for his girl. I say we all start a donation fund to purchase him a clean pair of underwear.

Dust - yes - DUST - can and will break down electronic devices, especially those with optical drives like DVD players and Blu-Ray players. Some dusts can also be conductive and may short out sensitive electronic components. His PS3 is a clear case of NEGLECT and HE is responsible for it. If any one of us does not keep up the recommended oil changes on our cars and the engine ceases, NO car manufacturer is going to give you a new engine - why? - because it's YOUR fault and stupidity that's responsible.

In other news, could this be a dirty op by MS to give the PS3 bad press? I mean seriously, I dust my PS3 every now and then, but for it to pile up on the dust like that...unless I lived out in wind dust city...hard to believe.

And you know what? I bet there's a good chance that if he just opened up and cleaned the whole PS3, inside and out - it might actually work again.

anyone who lets enough dust to build up that they stop working shouldn't be allowed to own said electronics. The kid who got a PS3 was lucky, i hope he never gets it repaired.

Why does anyone care what FOX has to say anyways....they haven't reported any REAL news in years. And the kid with the dusty PS3, he shouldn't get his system replaced but it looks like he is working the system and if he complains about it enough to get a preoblem for SONY they will probably give in.

Doesn't Fox and MS have some sort of business relationship? I know Fox Sports Online website does with MSN. And there you have it.

It just shows what a dirty house this guy lives in, He obviously has never heard of dusting his home or taking care of expensive electronics. As for sony I would take his PS3 from him and send him back a box filled with dust!

I want to punch that kid in the face. I've had my PS3 since Christmas and it was a gift and I'd never let it look like that. He deserves nothing. Seriously, that is a load of crap. Obviously he doesn't really care about his PS3. Stupid ******* FOX news.

If your console looks dusty, maybe you should get a swifer out and I dunno "clean it" once and a while. Or go through hell trying to repair it.

Seriously people how did you get so far up sony's arse?

Sure the thing is dusty no guff.. the thing collects dust like a maniac.. so by the looks of it this guy did not wipe of his ps3 since he bought it.. which was only a year ago and it should not void warranty like that..

sony should just give him a new one and avoid all this 360 like warranty crap. But the solution to this is quite simple.. make them send it back .. when the guy receives it just wipe it off and then send it back again stating that you took care of the hazardous material and it thus being safe to repair.

that should solve that.

The_Tombo

Yes it does void the warranty (as you will see further down) and so it should. Even if the PS3 or any other electronic product never got cleaned for 8 months to 1 year, it still should look nothing like that. Heck he has even got dust/dirt in the card slots. Why should Sony just give him a new one? Its then the case of if it ever happrens again or people start doing it on purpose they will have to keep giving people free repaired PS3's which makes no business sense. With all due respect, the guys house must be a tip and even worse, I would hate to think what the hell his lungs look like.

From the Safety and support booklet that came with the PS3 - EU - UK

"Do not expose the system or accessories to dust, smoke or steam. Also, do not place the system in an area subject to excessive dust or cigarette smoke. Dust build-upor cigarette smoke residue on the internal components (such as the lens) may-cause the system to malfunction."

So they have already warned people about it, hence why they will not fix it for free.

From the same book. The guarantee part.

"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe LTD ("SCEE") guarentees that this product is free from defects in materials and workmanship that result in product failure during normal usage in accordance with the terms set out in below and will, for a period of 1 (one) year from the date of original purchase, repair or )at SCEE's option) replace any component part of this product, free of charge, where it is faulty due to defective materials or workmanship."

This is from the same part as above in the Important section.

"12. You may not claim under this guarentee when the product is damaged as a result of:
i. commercial use, accident, fair wear and tear, negligence, abuse or misuse (including, without limitation, failure to use this product for its normal purpose and/or in accordance with instructions on proper use and maintenance, or installation or use in a manner inconsistent with applicable local technical or safety standards)
vi. operation or treatment of the product inconsistent with normal personal or domestic use or operation outside the product specifications."

I really hope he takes Sony to court. As you can see Sony are well covered. I hope he wastes his time and money on something stupid like this. He deserves all he gets.

Which with a comment like that unfortunity only applies to people with neo-socialist bias. It's not like other news outlets like CNN, MSNBC aren't unbias. Therefore, fanboyism hurts all and humanity.

Not wiping a console should not void a warranty. My PC gets really dusty at times but that's not affecting anything inside and opening a console voids the warranty. So the kid never bothered to wipe his console big deal. He should have at least wiped it off before sending it for repair but not to repair it because it has dust outside is just rediculous. I guess it's his fault for sending it in that conditition.

Have you even looked at the pics? The dust/dirt is INSIDE the USB and card reader slots. This is not 8 month old house dust. Even with the PS3 being a dust magnet, it should not get in them condtions. My dad has a 6 month old black car which has never been washed and seruiously its is comparable tot he stae of that PS3. My 5 year old PS2 isnt even that dirty.

I work at BestBuy and I cansay that...

Dust does not void the warranty for computer under a Best Buy PSP (Performance Service Plan)

It's considere NWNT (Normal Wear and Tear)

However, Sony is different and they have their own stupid rules.

Getting a repair through them was a breeze for me. They sent me the box recently and I shipped it off and just a few days ago I got the email telling me they shipped me a new console.

Its really that simple. YES they do require a receipt. Its part of the Warranty agreement. If you don't like it. Too bad soo sad.

As for the dust issue. They should repair it. Its really dusty, I agree....but you have to treat customer better than this.

No they dont and thats why they aint and the majority of people (based on lots of forums I have read) agree with Sony. They have got a set of rules and rightly so. The 'contract' between Sony and the customer is they provide you with a working PS3 and the customer has to then look after it (as stated in the warranty I posted earlier on. As I said Ive had my PS2 for 5 years and it looks nothing like the dust in those pics. That PS3 was neglected. Why should a company who is there to make money start reparing consoles for free when obviously they have been neglected. In no way shape or form can any of this be blamed on Sony.

I'm wondering if half the posts are even informed to the actual condition of the console being discussed. It's not normal dust. It's as if the dust of the world had a global conference and hosted it in this particular PS3. It's borderline dirt, like the Motorstorm commercial actually took place in his living room.

Exactly. My dads 6 month old black car thats never been washed is seriously comparable to how dirty that PS3 is. My 5 year old PS2 is nothing like that PS3. As I said, the dust/dirt on that PS3 is not normal 8 month old house dust.

Maybe Sony should just replace the console to avoid any negative media attention. I mean, lets face it, at this moment in time, the PS3 isn't doing all that well compared to other systems. Maybe Sony would be better off helping out its customers.

That being said, I would hate for them to do anything like that when clearly the kids just been too lazy to maintain his PS3 and keep it in a working condition. I mean it looked like he had been storing it inside a vacuum cleaner which was still in use.

FOX Got tricked!! Look at the pics again!

Look at the door that covers the memory card reader. How did all that dust (or dirt) get into all of them. Looks like the guy intentionally put or bury his ps3 in the ground.

They should repair his console for good press, but have a warning for this in the future stating they aren't resonsible for how a person treats their console.

Did he acutally say he wants some money because of the grief his PS3 has given him. The only thing I think people would say to him is did you clean your PS3? It's like you can sue for anythning these days.

I also like how he says he's spent 'over five hours' on the phone to Sony, as if it's such a burden to him. I guess this is quite a long time, but in the grand scheme of things, it isn't that much time. I mean, this kids saying he will go to court after all. That may, just possibly, take a little more than 5 hours, and cost a little more than 'nothing since Sony sent him the box.'

It is the persons fault. It looks like he buried his ps3 in a sandbox. Why should sony fix something that looks like it was intentionally destroyed.

That is awful, obviously it seems people are losing a sense of accountability. He didn't take care of his PS3 and thus has to face the consequences of not getting it repaired. But then again we live in a society that has a "it is truly all about me" attitude

I don't know who was worse. The kid who should not have his console replaced or the stupid pundit who didn't know his ass for his elbow. I had to stop the video because I couldn't watch anymore. When the guy said "nintendo had dust problems with the original nintendo, remember how you had to blow on the cartidges to make them work?" Meanwhile saying everything in a condescending tone. Dust had nothing to do with that problem with the NES. Bad design was the issue causing the conacts to warp. Blowing just made better connection abaility by adding moisture. But would add corrosion too, which made one feel they were making it work.

My PS3 has no dust at all on it. You have to have your system in a confined space to have that much dust like this guy did. The only reason to replace it free is because he has many Sony electronics to have good relations. Otherwise, people should learn they can't neglect their stuff and except other people to pay for it.
