yes, 1080i is really just upscaled 540p. true 720p will look better than 1080i. 1080i came out because the very first 1080p tv's had no content. so they kind of used this as a gimmick to try to sell 1080p tv's for 15 grand. true 1080p is very different from 1080i.
Take it from a regular person like me, who plays in both 720 and 1080, 1080 is better. The fonts are clearer, visual quality is crisp. It is better in all the games and movies I've tested.
Based on my Xbox360 and my LE26R72B Samsung i can actually say it does look better in 1080i then 720p. My and my friends (from what they said) can clearly view a more defined image. I guess it's because 720p = 1280x720 and my HDTV native resolution it's 1360x768 and being on 1080i gives it a better resolution, not sure how to explain, and not sure if i'm right >.> It just looks better to me.
No 1080i looks better than 720p on most HD TV's because it comes closer to filling all the pixels on your TV at any given moment. Most HD TV's have more pixels than 720p, even a 720p TV has 1366 x 768 as appose to 1280x720 1080i dithers 540 lines at 60fps, because the human eye can only really see motion at 29.97fps a 540 interlaced signal running at 60fps will appear to look closer to a full 1080 signal running at 30fps. 720p shows 720lines at 30fps without interlacing but because only 720 lines are filled at any given frame the picture will appear slightly blurry because it has to be upscaled to fit the 1366 x 768 resolution TV. Thus 720p looks worse than 1080i. Done't believe me take an HD movie and watch it at 1080i and then watch it at 720p, on most HD TVs 1080i gives you a crisper picture because of the interlaced illusion. Now if you can see at 60fps then 1080i will look terrible. But human eyes clocks out at roughly 30fps. But if you have superhuman powers an can see full 60fps motion like Superman then don't use 1080i as you'll only see half the image at any given frame.

Maybe totally unrelated, but when I was running Linux on my original Xbox the OS used more resources in order to run at 1080i 60 Hz image compared to a 720p. Did the OS need more resources because it just needs to do more calculations to interlace the image and 720 needs less calculations because it's is just a progressive image? Is 1080i technically a bigger image?
 1080i is more detailed because it can handle more lines/pixels onscreen than 720p or 480i/p.
 720p looks good also because it is progressive scanned, which is why 1080p looks better than 1080i. Also, 720p is better for games like R:FOM cause all of the action and fast pace takes a lot of rendering. If you put all that in 1080 (like NBA 07 & Tekken), you run the risk of glitching (at this point in time).
 I could go into details, but it'll be better if you take a class in electronics than to always take the word of a bunch of yahoos like myself all the time.
you cant really notice a difference, but for games 1080i is better. 720p has 60 frames per second, where as 1080i is intelaced so the 60 frames per second are halfed to make 30 fields per second. Its not quite as smooth. For films, 720p is better. Try playing a football game in 1080i then in 720p and u will notice the difference.
