Not necessary, but it does add to the overall experience. You may also want to consider surround sound as well. I have a Sharp 26" HDTV in my room, and it's perfect.

although i don't have a HDTV but i'd say that you should get an HDTV in the near future since most of the games comes with 720p resolution. Though both of my ps3 games look awesome without an hdtv but they look much nicer and sharper on a HDTV.

I think you will be very happy with your new investment if you bought a HDTV. I originally had and SDTV w/ my PS3. Then i bought a 50" Sony Grand Vega SXRD, and it is beautiful, and resistance online on the somerset map is gorgeous. :D

It is not necessary. The console costs over $600 because it doubles as a blu ray player so without an HDTV you spent $600+ on a console. I would say it's best to have an HDTV.

i know how bad my sdtv is because i can't read some of the writing on my screen, it irritates me to no end it is so blurry. if you can spare the money go for it. if you can read everything, i would just stick with what you've got for now. obviously hdtv is the way to go. wish i had one. :(

go with Vizio, awesome quality, great price, most have HD tuners built in.  I have a 42 inch Vizio 1080p, built in HD tuner, and I paid only $1099 for it brand new with a 3 year warranty.  A compareable Sony television is over $2800!

$1400 got me a 50" 1080p Panasonic Viera so I don't know what he's talking about either. You can get a nice 40" + 1080p set for well under $1000 if you just shop around a bit. TC, yes to me it's a deal breaker. I probably wouldn't even be playing console games if I didn't have an HD set to be honest. Games nowdays are meant to be played in widescreen HD so you're missing out on a lot if you don't get one. IMO, perhaps a lot of us are just spoiled, though.

yeah it looks good, just make sure you get S-Video cable. DO NOT USE THE COMPOSITE THAT COMES WITH IT, LOOKS LIKE CRAP. That said, I went from a 28 inch Standard tv, to my Pioneer Pro-111FD, and it makes me want to cry.

It's not exactly a requirement, but it provides a better gaming experience. Everything looks sharper and more detailed on an HDTV.

IMHO as long as you can keep you big screen for TV ect then yes. i would rather play my ps3 on a 26' HDtv "wich is what i have" than on a 51' SD tv. the pic is so much better. And you can get 26' HD tvs verry cheap now. they have vizio "what i use" for 349.99 at wallmart and for 100 bucks more you can get a samsung wich are great TV's. 32' tvs can be had for around 500$ now. 40 and 42' HDtvs are between 800 and 1000$.

maybe i missed something but if you talking about hooking a ps3 up to a "HD"tv then S video wont give you a HD picture. use HDMI.

To be honest, I think HD is over-rated. It's great, and I definately don't seem myself going back to SD, but nothing in the gameplay really is affected. If you have money to spend on something other than games, then why not?

i play on a 15 inch SDtv and i love my ps3, so i dont think it matters at all to how much you love it, but it is prettier on a hdtv, i got a 26 inch hdtv that my gf watches tv on, so i stuck with the baby one, but its sexy on the hd. starting to blab now :D its not important but it is prettier.

No it is not Necessary, but sure is nice to have. There is a huge difference in picture quality. The PS3 will play on a SDTV. It would be like building a PC with top of the line parts and then deciding to use a old monitor that can only do 800x600 max res.

Get your PS3 and play it on what you got. Then skip on a lot of game buying to save for the HDTV. Once you have a nice HDTV, you can go back and get the games you skipped and they should be cheaper by then which would save you money. If the PS3's online is anything like PC's, then there are still people playing Resistance 1 online, so you won't be missing anything if you don't get every game on day one. And singleplayer can not go bad like multiplayer (nobody playing online=going bad) can. And if a game needed patched, It should be patched by the time you get around to buying games again. If I was in your boat, I would get the PS3 and 5 games. Once I owned 5 games, I would stop buying games and save up for the HDTV, then buy games again. But that's just me.

Size may not be so important as the number of pixels.

For instance, many people on SDTVs have complained about the text in Dead Rising on the 360. The exact same problem I experienced on Valkyria Chronicles on a 27 inch SDTV. I could barely read the text.

If that reason alone, HD systems are meant to be played on HDTVs. That and the game just looks so much better and especially in FPSes, that extra resolution allows you to pick up people from further distances or in camo easier.

I would like to personally shoot everyone who said a HDTV is not needed in the head right now.

When I first played without HDMI cable in 480p, I felt like punching a wall. The games looked like ps2 games. I swear its true.

However when I first connected in 720p, it changed EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING I SAY. Like playing 2 different games.

I know you probably wont listen to me and will listen to the tech geeks who say their bla bla bla... But if you do listen to me then you wont be disappointed.

Not necessary but if you can afford one, you won't be disappointed. Besides gaming, Blue ray movies at 1080p (120hz) is no joke!! Its so clear it takes a little getting used to (so life like it seems like someone is walking a round witha a camcorder or something). you can get a 32 inch samsung (great quality for 1g or less). I gave up my Redskin season ticketmoney (sold them to a friend for a year) to get a 52 Inch Samsung 1080p 120 hz last may and it blows all fam/friends away when they see it. Brought my PS3 to llife (and I had a decent1080i I older model projection set)

Also I didn't even mention Cable or DTV in HD (if you got it) In my op 25 Inch HDTV beats a 50-60 SD TV any day of the week

you technically don't need one. but i really really really think you should invest in one cause it'll make your gaming experience on the PS3 MUCH better imo.

Ha, both of you got jipped. I got my LG 50" 1080p Plasma for less than $1000  Brand new too from Best Buy. HDTV is worth it if you can afford it but if not and your SDTV is in working order and you can hold out for an HDTV for a bit longer I don't see any problem. It just adds on tot he experience when you play your games but it's eye/ear candy watching a bluray movie w/ surround sound :D

ANOTHER GRAND C'mon man I spent about 900 bucks for a 42" FULL HD tv (1080p). I don't understand.

$1400 got me a 50" 1080p Panasonic Viera so I don't know what he's talking about either. You can get a nice 40" + 1080p set for well under $1000 if you just shop around a bit. Not true. Depends when they bought theirs vs when you bought your. I payed $1,300 for mine and it is only a 32". But I also bought mine 5 years ago. If I was to buy it today, it would only cost me a few hundred

i know how bad my sdtv is because i can't read some of the writing on my screen, it irritates me to no end it is so blurry. if you can spare the money go for it. if you can read everything, i would just stick with what you've got for now. obviously hdtv is the way to go. wish i had one. :(s0njas0n
If you get a monitor with HDMI, you will get HD quality (with the HDMI cable) cheaper than a hd tv

The only downside is that the built in speakers are typically horrible. You'll need a separate sound source whether it be surround sound of a set of simple speakers.
