I purchased a 40" 1080p Sony Bravia HDTV even before acquiring a PS3 (and I wanted a PS3 real bad), because I knew full well that among all current-generation consoles, PS3 is the one that takes full advantage of the high-definition technology era (Blu-Ray, high resolution, multimedia capabilities).
I didn't even bother hooking up a PS3 to an SDTV because of that, and an HDTV definitely makes a whole difference in visuals. And at 600$, the PS3 needs the best you can offer to truly shine as a high-definition videogame console. While an HDTV is expensive, it is a worthwhile investment.
As an alternative to buying an HDTV, you may consider getting an HDMI-supported PC monitor for much less (under 400$) at 24" and below, and still obtain excellent visual quality from your PS3. Granted, it isn't exactly the best for many PS3 users, as the reduced screen size means less room for viewing during movie sessions with family and friends, and a less immersive experience overall due to the size factor of the screen.
