They're overated for the majority of games. It just depends on your HDTV, if you're using hmdi, and it depends on the blu ray movie itself. I still watch dvds and I really notice the big jump it has when I watch movies on blu ray. You probably need an HDTV that's 40 inches and up and to make sure it runs true 1080p.

some vital informations are missing about the user's setup :

- using HDMI / component / composite cable?

- brand of the TV

- depending on the TV brand, what settings are used? (check on google best settings and name of TV)

and yes, HD movies wins over any DVD or upconverted DVD (which is only an optical illusion, as a HD TV displays either 1280x720= 921600 or 1920x1080= 2073600 pixels compared to 409920 pixels for a SD TV, which means the HD TV or upconverter will just stretch or imagine the existing pixels to fill the screen ; anyway good brands of TV like Sony, Samsung or Panasonic have an integrated upconverter which makes and upconverting DVD player useless). The colors, detail, movement (another factor is the bitrate, meaning at what speed the signal comes from the disc to the TV) just can't be compared.

Of course the 4 movies you have are not reference by far (yes, the Lord of the rings movies usually get 3.5/5 on the best review sites for image quality). Just try Pirates of the Carribean, Avatar,Planet Earth, Transformers, Watchmen, ; older ones like Matrix, Urban legend, Black hawk down, The Rock and even older like Blade Runner, Good bad and ugly, Gone with the wind or 2001 are considered reference material too.

And yes, most Blu-ray movie will have black bars up and down, as they use the format they were filmed in, which is not the size of the screen

[QUOTE="Bloody_Demons"]

My only complaint with blu-ray disc is the sound...i hate it because inorder to hear conversations clearly you have to turn the volume up alot but when a action scene bustout then the sound is so loud it will wake the dead...i have always hated that. don't get me wrong the picture quality is excellent but i wish their was a way to adjust the sound to make the volume stay at the same level no matter what is taking place in the movie

DJ_Lae

I have to complain about this too, though it's less the fault of Blu-ray and more the fault or poor mixing. I've got DVDs that have the same issue. It's more annoying because I live in an apartment and simply can't crank up my speakers to compensate, and the 2.1 mixes (or downsampling) are almost always horrible.

Why dont u both try adjusting the dynaic range of the sound, this will allow u to turn the volume up without wakign the dead when loud action starts. All bluray players and amps/receivers will let u do this to help avoid the problems u both describe.

I have to ask though have u both correctly set up the sound levels for the individual channels either with an SPL meter or the amp doin it itself? if not then this alone could explain the lack of volume in the centre channel. This would b the absolute first thing i would do before anythin else, it will make a huge difference if u haven't done so already.

as far as games go, Personallyi thinkHD is overated.I notice the diffrence when i seen sports programs on tv in HD but im not seeing a big diffrence with gamesand blu raymovies.

But blu ray movies is the topic andI have a total of 4 blu ray movies(paid $7 t0 $10) and one thing i hate is displays with black bars. I hate that.

granted all 4 movies are just remastered version so i am wondering do i need to see recentmovies?

The 4 movies i got

1. The Lost Boys(1987)

2. Lord Of The Rings : The Fellowship(2001)

3. Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers(2002)

4. Wizard Of Oz( 1930 somthing)

PSP107

Are you using HDMI? And does your HDTV output at full 1080p? You should try seeing recent CGI-effects heavy movies on Blu Ray(Avatar, Inception, Pixar...). Your view on HD will never be the same again.

I'm not even going to read the rest of this rubbish thread. Fact is Bluray movie is better, yes upconverted can look good, but we are talking quality, and hands down goes to bluray.

Also if you think quality isn't good but hate black bars I recommend that you don't use the zoom mode or else you are going to really kill the pic.

I can literally walk into a room and and tell right off the bat whether something is on bluray or dvd. Heck my Dad was using the zoom feature for football last night, 5 min. later I said hand me the remote and sure enough zoom mode and I then quickly set it back to 16:9 aspect, it was just killing me lol.

Also if quality is what we are talking about then streamed HD movies WILL NEVER win out, sorry, once again they look good but not not up to snuff with bluray. I hate the fact that I streamed the "Expendables" in hd then just waiting on my bluray version from Netflix.

Also for gaming, bluray just adds space for devs to use for their games, not picture quality. Remember guys bluray is just a storage device, hence why dvd only has what 9gb's of space and that can't hold a full HD movie with uncompressed audio. So we got Bluray that can hold up to 50gb's of info.

Also right now there is bluray players out there for $100, so anyone complaining of price now for bluray is just crazy. Heck prior to my ps3 I bought a $100 upconverting dvd player, so sorry once again but Bluray is affordable if some one has a hdtv.

Dynex is cool, but by no means top of the line picture quality by any means. Not talking bad about your set at all, just from a point of view of the quality of sets out there on the market. I had first bought a Sanyo plasma and it didn't really wow me at all, I then took it back and bought a top of the line Samsung Plasma at the time and it was like night and day. Literally almost like going from dvd to bluray. TV's now days you really get what you want to pay for. Have you got a lcd or plasma? If lcd definitly try to calibrate your brightness levels. And also on a cheaper lcd you can have some bad motion issues during heavy action scenes.
