the only thing you need to consider about dvi is whether or not the connector on the back of your monitor can handle either single link or double link DVI cables or both

http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html

scroll to the bottom of the page and it shows you the difference between single and double link connections

DVI-D = digital (d=digital)

DVI-I = analog and digital signals

DVI-A = Analog signal

There are 5 types of DVI plug.

DVI-D = Digital (single and dual link)
DVI-A = Analog
DVI-I = Analog & Digital (single and dual link)

As you can see, some are compatible. Exemple : DVI-D single link can plug into a DVI-I single & dual link.

Just check witch one you have.

HDMI to DVI cables are usually DVI-D single link.

It will most likely work with that cable. I would say I am certain but you never know what kind of cable you might get. As I said, all of the HDMI-DVI cables I have seen had a DVI-D single link plug and this type will work on your monitor if it as a DVI-D input. Other ways involve either getting a monitor with components input or a graphic card with video capture functions.

The one i have is an HDMI to DVI that is a DVI-D dual link.  I got it at radioshack.

dual link inputs can accept single and double link dvi cables

you need to buy and HDMI cable and a HDMI to DVI converter

unless you buy a monitor with an HDMI input (very rare) that would be the only way to connect your ps3

HDMI = digital signal

So HDMI-DVI cables will be in DVI-D dual or single link. Could be in DVI-I but I really don't see the point of it.

don't waste that much on that cable. just get one from monoprice.com. assuming you live in Canada (hence the bestbuy.ca link) they also ship to Canada and you don't have to pay any duties for crossing the border (i've ordered a couple times from monoprice). infact, this is the cable i'm using with my ps3 right now. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2404&seq=1&format=2&style=
