Is it just me or has 2011 been very disappointing?

I can't help but feel disappointed with gaming this year, no single game has really impressed me or left me wanting to play more. I have played:

Killzone 3 - Downgrade from KZ2
inFamous 2 - Good game but falls short from great
LA Noire - Big disappointment
Crysis 2 - Disappointing
Bulletstorm - Average
Brink - Awful
Motorstorm Apocalypse - The worse Motorstorm
Socom 4 - Very average

It just seems like all these games lack something special, the best on the list are just good, not incredible. The only games I see that can save 2011 for me are Uncharted 3 and AC Revelations.

In general, I think gaming is starting to lose its magic. All I really see is shooting games, I was so hyped for Insomniacs new announcement. I was hoping for a great new platforming adventure game, a new world to explore. Instead they revealed a bland looking shooting game.

Anybody else wished there was less focus on shooting people and hyper realistic graphics, and more on the actual game? Games seem to lack atmosphere, a sense of adventure, story, imagination, art, and that special spark. I'd give anything for a new universe like Jak or Ratchet.

Anyone agree?

Its all in personal taste, I loved infamous 2, marvel vs capcom 3, LBP2 and killzone 3. All depends if you are enjoying the games or not :o

oh a bulletstorm was a nice surprise too, was really fun imo

I agree with you on Killzone 3, it's just another FPS.

I don't see how La Noire was a big disappointment. That game was very fun. Still loving Killzone 3. Enjoying MLB 11 The Show. Crysis 2 was something new. Like what the other poster said, it matters on how much you enjoy the games. I enjoyed every game a lot.

2011 will explode come Oct-Dec. There will be so many games that I'm buying I wont know what to do with myself.

But I do agree with you on video games loosing their magic recently. To many devs are just going out and making the same thing over and over again I'm hopping it is just a phase and it blows over but we will see.

That's another thing that winds me up nowadays. Why are so many blockbuster games crammed into the fall period? As a University Student, I have time to play games in the summer. As soon as I go back to University in October, all the good games come out. Damn you developers.

Even the darn Splinter Cell Trilogy has been delayed until one week before I go back, I was counting on that to tie me over.

The top 3 this year for me so far are Little Big Planet 2, Portal 2 & Mass Effect 2... None of those are on your list TC, & imo those are the best three games from the last TWO years, not just this year. 2010 was definitely worse thanks in part to all the delays.

I don't think gaming has lost its magic quite yet. I do think that about tv, movies & music, but gaming is the one source of entertainment that's still evolving and delivering. You just have to look a bit harder to find the right games.

Try Deus Ex, Dark Souls & Skyrim all out this year. Or if you really hate rpgs for some reason, try Dead Island, Saints Row 3, Batman Arkham City, Serious Sam 3 or Twisted Metal... there's tonnes to look forward to & I didn't even mention Uncharted or AC, or MW / BF / Resistance 3...

TL:DR: It's just you.

Well of course you're going to be disappointed if you just run down a list of the AAA titles that received a lot of advertising and media hype. Just because there's money behind them doesn't mean they're going to be of any particular interest to you personally.

I just pick games that really do interest me - ones that are different, offer an original experience, that have environments that I'd really like to spend tens of hours in; that have characters with personality, that promise an interesting story. If you actually choose your own games instead of letting the media do it for you, there's no shortage of great stuff out there.

Maybe for you. I have Mortal Kombat, LBP 2, LA Noire, and Infamous 2 alone to keep me more than satisfied.

Just you. Loved Dragon Age II, L.A Noire and InFamous 2. Deus Ex is in a month, then Disgaea 4, Skyrim and Uncharted 3. One of the best years for me as a gamer.

Fair comment but I don't just buy hyped titles. I try to find the gems but I can't find any from this year, can you name some games that fit your description from this year?

I haven't bought LBP2 since I own LBP and never play it, the novelty wore off quickly. I played the ME2 demo and didn't really understand the praise, the awful voice acting of the main character was enough for me to stop playing. Portal 2 does look good though and I'm thinking of buying it.

I've enjoyed the games I've played so far, DA 2 and LA Noire were both great fun. Also, the best games (to me) are yet to come out: UC3, Skyrim, Rage, Assassins Creed Rev....plus many more...

Not really. Dragon Age II was rushed but everything else has been good. If a little by-the-numbers.

Anybody else wished there was less focus on shooting people and hyper realistic graphics, and more on the actual game? Games seem to lack atmosphere, a sense of adventure, story, imagination, art, and that special spark.

Asim90

Kinda. I think Dark Souls, Skyrim, UC 3 and the ICO & Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD remasters will cover those things nicely.

Well it's like Movies. The Oscar Winning Movies don't come out till the end of the year normally. Same goes with games. The best of the best come out at the end, hence the term "best for last." That's why E3 waits till the middle of the year to show off new games, because the best games come out in Q3 and Q4.

For the games I've bought:

Mass Effect 2 - Yeah I know it was originally released for 360 and PC a year ago but this now one of my favorite PS3 games ever. Amazing, thanks for putting it on PS3!

Dead Space 2 - Even better than the original. They made the shooting more precise and added even more guns and other things.

Crysis 2 - My favorite FPS of the year. (so far) It had a very nice campaign that was a decent length in which you could play shooting or using stealth. The multiplayer I also found fun besides the servers

Killzone 3 - Biggest disappointment for me. The campaign's story was pretty weak and it felt shorter than KZ2. The Villians in the third were not as good as the ones in KZ2. (Radec, Visari) The biggest turn off for the game was the multiplayer. KZ2 was one of my favorites but they made KZ3 just to make the COD/casual crowd happy. It was a downgrade for multiplayer, no custom servers and unbalanced classes contributed to this. (cough marksman cough)

LA Noire - Very original and fun game. People that are disappointed by it probably just hate not being able to shoot everything up like you can do GTA. Call me crazy but I liked this more than GTA4 or Red Dead Redemption :o

If you hate Mark Meer's voice acting play as Female Shepard. She is voiced by Jennifer Hale (the person that voice acts Naomi in MGS)

commas man!!!

There were quite a few memorable titles this year.... Dead Space 2 i agree with, that weird Catherine game that came out getting good reviews. Portal 2 was awesome. I liked L.A Noire.... and we still have a lot of good games coming out.. Gears of war 3 for those xbox 360 users, Resistance 3, dead island. June and July are just slow months... i always get bored of games around this time as well.

My addatives are in red.

I can't help but feel disappointed with gaming this year, no single game has really impressed me or left me wanting to play more. I have played:

Killzone 3 - Downgrade from KZ2 Never played it, but Im sure your correct
inFamous 2 - Good game but falls short from great Was just as good as the first
LA Noire - Big disappointment Depends on what kind of game you like, I thought it was pretty good
Crysis 2 - Disappointing Best Single Player FPS Story I have ever played, but it has bad multiplayer
Bulletstorm - Average Never played
Brink - Awful I agree
Motorstorm Apocalypse - The worse Motorstorm Never played
Socom 4 - Very average I didn't personally like it.

It just seems like all these games lack something special, the best on the list are just good, not incredible. The only games I see that can save 2011 for me are Uncharted 3 and AC Revelations. What? No BattleField 3, Modern Warfare 3, or Elder Scrolls Skyrim? All those games will be incredible! ( I hope )

I'd give anything for a new universe like Jak or Ratchet.I would love to see a new Jak game, I have been tempted for the last few months to buy a PS2 and play some good PS2 ****cs.

Anyone agree?

Asim90

While you do make some good points, its all opinion. I personally feel like this is one of the best years for us gamers. With more the 10 good games out this year, ( LittleBigPlanet 2, Crysis 2, L.A. Noire, Uncharted 3, Assassins Creed Revelations. Elder Scrolls Skyrim, BattleField 3, Modern Warfare 3, Dead Island, and who forgot about Portal 2). While I am still holding my breath for some titles, I am hoping they will be good, or atleast playable.

Pretty much every "Good" game this year is a sequel/rehash. Ones that didn't live up to their predecessors, too. For me I'm done this year after Dark Souls.

I'm going to read a little more into ME2, since so many people praise it. For the Skyrim lovers, I'm sure it will be great but I don't really enjoy RPG's. ME2 incorporated some TPS elements though so I might purchase it. I still think the voice acting is monotonous and off putting but I'll give it another go.

Pretty much most of them games u have up there were just awful to me, and thats kz3, and socom 4 imo. Games that im looking forward too this year, uncharted 3 (single player), and metal gear solid HD collection cant wait. Im done waisting money on half game and bad online pass and online play.

Anyone agree?

I agree with the OP, none of the games this year have been much more than average. LBP2 was pretty decent but even that wasn't amazing by any means. The rest of the year better be freakin awesome or this will have turned out to be a garbage gaming year.

I actually think this is a pretty good year for games. I've yet to play it, but Alice: Madness Returns looks very good. Two Worlds 2 is actually a really fun game for what it is, just ignore the critic reviews. The ps3 got ME2 this year, which was great. Other games that look promising include:

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
  • ES: Skyrim
  • Dark Souls
  • The Cursed Crusade (will even be sold at $40 as an attempt to get sales in the midst of other, largert titles)
  • Battlefield 3
  • Twisted Metal
  • Uncharted 3 (well, ok, I may hold off on this until I can try it out since the mp beta was disappointing to me)
  • AC: Revelations (I'm going to have to hold off on it as well since I'm just playing AC:B now, and I'll need a break from it)

And very early next year we should get ME3 and Final Fantasy XIII-2

Really, out of the 13 games mentioned, only 2 of them (Battlefield 3 and U3) are strictly shooters. I'd say we're looking at a pretty diverse selection of games to come out this year. Granted, I probably won't be getting them all due to their prices, but seeing as I'm just playing FF XIII now and a few other games from last year that's not really a problem (for me at least).

I don't think it's been that disappointing, there have been a few great games:

Portal 2
Dead Space 2
Witcher 2

I think 2011 has been a fantastic year for gaming so far, and it's gonna get better. Can't wait for Skyrim and Sonic Generations, amongst others.

I've bought LBP2, KZ3, Socom 4, LA Noire, Dead Space 2, DCUO and Crysis 2. LA Noire and KZ3 were decent, I love Socom 4 but the rest sucked, especially Crysis and Socom. I haven't got Portal 2 or MK yet but I agree this year has been crappy. In Q4 I want about 12 games though so that should make up for it.

I do agree that its been a bit of a disappointment so far for me personally, but thats mostly on the shoulders of Killzone 3. I had serious high hopes for that game, and it was a total let down. Socom 4 was a letdown even though I had no hopes for it at all LOL. I disagree about Infamous 2 and Motorstorm however. Infamous 2 is a great game that far exceeds its predecessor. Motorstorm single player is a step back for sure, but online is far better than the last game and more like the first one which had the best online. This one has more tracks though. Pacific Rift was full of exploits that ruined online play. Of course you forgot Portal 2 which is completely awesome. A lot of folks like DCU and LBP2. Overall, Id say this year has been good. Not as good as it could be or as good as last year though.

I enjoyed Mass Effect2, dirt3 and Crysis 2 the most. Yes, I really liked Crysis 2. I bought it with low expectations, but was really surprised.
