I don't have a PS3 (nor do I know anyone with one) but I was planning on buying one sometime in the near future.  There are a bunch of games coming out within the next year or so that look like they're more than worth playing, so I'm not worried about games.  I'm basically worried about errors and system performance.  Have many people had trouble with the PS3?  Are there any prevelant errors like the PS2 disc read error?  Anyway, I'm looking for a general opinion about how well the system works.  I was assuming the high price tag means that the parts are high quality and I shouldn't have to worry much about it crashing, but tell me if I'm wrong.

The system is really reliable although at this moment some people are having a bit of trouble with internet access (me included) but this is a problem that isn't related to the build quality of the console (The PS3 is probbley the most well made one I have owned)

If your worried about the console having problems and the games you want will not be out until the end of the year then you could wait as they will most likely have a pricedrop around that time.

I personaly would recomend buying a PS3 as it has a couple of A+ games right now and lot's more coming in the next year (The PS3 is going to force me to get a part time job I just know it)

I you do decide to get one I look forward to playing with you online.

The PS3 build quality is great, however the controllers build quality does vary a little bit. If I were to drop my PS3, I'd be more scared for anybody/thing underneith it and my floorboards than I would for the PS3.

If there are any errors they are usually your own fault (when connecting to the WiFi, and entering the wrong information - for example), and all of the major issues in the past (like Blu-ray movies randomly freezing during playback) got fixed within a matter of days.

The PS3 build quality is leaps and bounds ahead of the PS2, and it is certainly better than the other two consoles on the market (check the "Smash my PS3"/"Smash my Wii"/"Smash my 360" videos on the net to see how much of a beating the PS3 took compared to the 360 and Wii).

The PS3 is worth it. I own the 360 and PS3. Right after I bought the 360, the DVD tray problem and disc read error occured. The PS3 in the other hand had no issues at all and I had it since beginning of this year. The free online play and Bluray movie player is definetly worth your $599. The games that are out right now is only a few but it's all pretty good games. For example, Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Virtual Fighter 5, Tekken 5 DR, Calling All Cars, and Oblivion are all great games to own right now. The multiplayers are free too. I would say get it now and then buy these games. By the time you done with them, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and other great games like Heavenly Swords will be out.

That's just what I wanted to hear.  Thanks, all of your replies are very helpful.  I'm actually leaving the country to take a summer semester abroad in a few weeks, so I won't have much free time in the coming months and getting a PS3 now is probably not a good idea.  However, I'm hoping for a price drop in the fall (although it seems unlikely given what I've read).  If there is a drop in September or October I'll almost definitely get one then, if not I'll be very unhappy and very unsure of what to do :/.  Anyway, thank you again for the helpful responses.

PS3 is worth getting as of now because PS3 has a strong line-up before the winter even gets here, we got awesome games coming such as HAZE, Uncharted: drakes fortune & many more, so believe it or not if you get a PS3 now there are games out that can hold you till then, So my answer is yes, to those who say no should think before they give an answer, the PS3 had a poor launch and came a very long way and will go even farther in the years to come.

The PS3 is awesome!

AND it's the only console that will get FFXIII, Lair, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, SOCOM, Warhawk, Killzone, a possible God War 3, etc. etc. etc.

The PS3 is absolutely worth getting. Just remember that you're getting a whole lot more than a gaming console with it. If you've got a PSP, then it makes getting a PS3 even more compelling. As far as the hardware is concerned, this thing is built like a tank. I have never run into any problems with it. My Xbox 360 has broken down twice since I got it 13 months ago. Since then, I've sold it. The PS3 has an absolutely awesome lineup of diverse games coming out for it and it also includes free online play. Blu-Ray is a nice bonus, especially if you have an HDTV. Basically, the PS3 is the best way to go, unless your idea of video gaming starts and ends with Halo. In that case, I pity you...

The PS3 is definitely very high quality and very reliable. The only problem I've had with mine that wasn't user error was that the wireless wouldn't work with the router I had when I first got it. I ended up having to replace the router, since going wired isn't an option for me. But that's the only issue I'm aware of. I've only ever even heard of a couple people having problems with theirs--and of course, a few people having problems is inevitable with any technology. But as someone else pointed out, you'll notice there is no broken PS3 sticky thread. :P
