Is "Home" a new thing or has there been something like it before?

From what I've seen, a PC program called Second Life is simular to it. But PS3's Home will have different features and so on, and linked to games where as Second Life is just a virtual life like a beefed up Sims, minus it being a game.

new service.  Never been anything like it on consoles.  The best part is that you will be able to do everything home can do with out ever going into home, so home is like this awesome bonus from sony.

Where did you get that info?  I'd been hoping that Home was more of a bonus interface than a requirement, I far prefer things accessible via simple menus.  But so far I had not found any actual info stating this.Â
