I was just wondering as to this upscaling emotion chip thing that's in the PS3 now.. will it be that bad?  In other words, would one need to get a PS3 before April if they care about PS1/2 games and have a huge collection?  or what?

So did they completely remove backwards compatibility, or are they doing it through emulation now?

It's a good thing because it is a step for a cheaper PS3.

What if they don't make it cheaper, though? Then it's a bad thing I guess.

Sony is removing the emotion chip because they are ones manufacturing the chip. Its a smart move because sony is not a major chip producing company. They can focus there resources on other departments.

Having the emotion chip in PS3 worked better for BC, but the thing is, in the long run it's not going to be practical to keep including obsolete hardware within a new system. It keeps getting more expensive with each generation that passes, so eventually, having only software emulation is going to be the way to go.

I guess it's good to get the switch over with now, before it becomes really hard. And hey, I have my emotion-engine equipped PS3 anyway, so I've got nothing to loose either way. :P

They could've just incorporated the EE logic into the Cell, couldn't they? Isn't that what eventually happened with the PS2 Slimline with the PS1 chip?

If it makes it cheaper, yes! If it doesn't, no!

well, they just spent 1billion or so in R&D to make the Cell, and the Cell isnt going to be just used for the ps3, its going into computers. they cant just superglue the chips together, plus emulation is cheaper and easier anyway

Your HDTV has to upscale any 480i/480p signal to display it anyway. I'd rather have a PS3 that plays all PS2 games than one that upscales(something my HDTV already does) and plays far fewer games.

yea, but with emulation it can be done on the source side, rather than through the TV, the TV is just going to stretch it. with the Cell and emulation, it is possible to clean it up so you dont get the jaggies.

I just mean combining the logic onto one die. It's not difficult. All the R&D Sony spent on the Cell was for the design of its logic, not the manufacturing.

you are correct, but that would cost more than emulation, and they would have to switch the way they are producing it, since it was made for general computing, IBM obviously plans on putting it into computers, including their blade server
