Compared to the 360 thats around the same price the 40gb... noashunpnoy
Yea well for the money any ps3 is more for the money than any 360. But I would take the MGS 80 over the "gun whatever one," any day.
It plays PS3 games and Blu-rays.
Do you need it to do more?
If you want some BC and an extra 40GB on your HDD then get the 80GB. Neither is a rip-off.

Well, it's not like the 40 is a real PoS... but it's just that the other models are better. If you can only afford the 40gb, I'd say go for it.

Do you NEED it to play PS/PS2 games?
Do you NEED the extra 40GB immediaitely?
Please do not confuse NEED with WANT.
Yes to either question means you should buy an 80GB.

Why is 20 better than 40? I thought it was 60>80>40>20
The only difference between an 80gb and a 20gb is the SKU, and that can be fixed with an HDD upgrade.
On the other hand the 40gb has less stuff than the 80gb/20gb regardless the SKU

Ask yourself this...Do u want a ps3 to play PS3 games or PS2 games? If you want the latter go drop 100 bucks on a PS2 and enjoy. If you want the former, the 40gb is perfect. If runs PS3 games, movies and everything else that the 80 does. Unless you want to put 4000 songs, 20-30 movies or 50 demos on your ps3, go with the 40GB. I dont put that kinda stuff on my ps3 because i find it stupid and thats what my pc is for. i use my ps3 only for...PLaying Games
Watching Movies
thats it..

I thought it was also missing the wi-fi, some usb ports, an hdmi port, and the card reader(from the 60)
no its not a rip-off, Sony didnt release the 40gb ps3 for people to get ripped off, they released the 40gb ps3 for a reason. a lot of people already have a ps2, why do u need backwards compability, and people dont even need those flash card readers, and some people didnt want the 2 extra usb ports. so sony made a new ps3 model that doesnt have all that and is less expensive, and those same people are complaining again, the 40gb ps3 is not a rip off. If the following is your condition, then the 40gb ps3 is the best for you:
Backwards Compability: If you have a PS2 already, then u dont need to pay the extra 100 dollars for the 80gb ps3, the 40gb ps3 is good!
USB Ports: If you dont need 4 usb ports, then again the 40gb ps3 is good for you, the 40gb ps3 has 2 usb ports, but u can always buy more for around 15 dollars!
40GB more HDD space: sure the 80gb ps3 has more space, but to tell the truth, u dont even need that much, but if u do then u can always upgrade to a more higher one !
btw, incase u guys didnt know, the 40gb ps3 uses enhanced coolers so:
It runs much more quieter, isnt as loud as the 80gb, 60gb or 20gb, and is much more cooler, so it has less chance of overheating and stays cool all the time!
so considering all of this, if you dont care about the bc, 2 extra usb ports, 40gb of more hdd space or even the flash card readers, then no the 40gb ps3 is not a rip of. It has everything the same as the other ps3's and runs much more quiter and cooler, but it doesnt have all that stuff that i meantioned above, and no its not a rip off!
It depends what you want it for. I don't care much for the BC because I have PS2. I do want an extra 20 or 40 gigs but I can make do with the 40. The 2 extra USB ports would be a plus but I don't need them that much. Overall, no the 40 gig can funtion just as good.
But it probably depends on what you want.

I lucked out and found a 60 gig, last of the true fully backwards compatible systems. The 60 gig was the only one with a true emotion engine in it (ps2) which is great cause ive been goin back and playin alot of older games waiting on killzone 2 and metal gear to come out.
The 40 gig was available when I bought mine but backwards compatability was crucial in my decision. If I were you id say tuck back a few more bucks and go for the 80 gig. (at least it emulates most games)
Backwards Compatability: If you have a perfectly healthy Ps2, you don't have to worry about this.
USB Ports: The only time you'll ever REALLY need these is when your controllers run out of juice. If you have 2 controllers, you can plug up the dead one into the machine and use the live one to play. The only time you'll use more than one is if multiple controllers are low on battery or if your playing Rock band (Wirless dongle for Mic and Guitars and chord for drum set). Even then your only using 2.
40GB of data: With some pretty big instal bases now and in the near future, it might be wise to upgrade the HDD. But there are only a handful of Ps3 games that require instal bases. And remember you can always buy a bigger hard drive.
The 40GB still has an HDMI slot, WiFi, Blu-Ray and all the other Ps3 features (except Memory Stick slots and Card Readers, but you'll almost never use those anyway.)
In the end it's up to YOU.

It's not a rip off in any way. It's missing PS2 backwards compatability, which, point in case, is avalable by simply buying a seperate PS2 for anywhere from 30$ used to 110$ new.
It is also missing two USB ports on the front of the machine, compared to the 80GB... however, you really don't need those ports unless you play something like Rock Band... and then you can get an adaptor anyways.
Certainly I sometimes wish I could use one single system to play all my Playstation games, but it really isn't a big deal.
Compared to the 80 gb, its far inferior. But if you dont care all that much about backwards compatibility, then its great. And there's that rumor that the 40 gb will have limited b/c in october anyway. And the 360 premium costs way more when you figure in the 50 dollars a month for xbl, the 100 dollar wifi connector, and all the other crazy things, all for an inferior system.hillelslovak
Dude, it's 50$ a YEAR, not a month. That's less than 5$ a month.
kweel , now i have made up my mind, ill be getting the 40Gig for 350 :) so i can get more stuff with the extra $$...
- i can get an external memory card readers wich would be better i think, since i can plug it into the PS3...and PC...
- 2 USB ports are more than enough ....if not...there are USB Hubs for a cheap price
- Cheap External Hard Drives or a bit more an internal one
- PS2 BC...well....there are only like...2 games that i havent played....and that i'd like to play ONLY ( FFXII and Shadow of the Colossus )
:D !!
anyways...keep posts comming :D

$50 a month. You my sir, are the biggest Sony fanboy I have ever come across. You make it sound like the Xbox 360 is one of the worst consoles ever created. It's actually one of the best. Now, it's not as good as the PS3, but it's damn close. Plus, $50 a year for better online is worth it to me.
Anyways... back on topic.
No, the 40 GB isn't a rip off. As someone said before me, there's a rumor that the 40 GB will be backwards compatible with PS2 games through software emulation. So then, the only difference will be a bigger Hard Drive, which I can get a 250 GB Hard Drive for $100.
I'd say go for the 40 GB, but you can't go wrong either way

i DO know that the 40G doesnt plays PS2 games, i mentioned the only 2 PS2 games that i will miss if i get the 40G
Ask yourself this :
1) Do you NEED to play PS2 titles on your PS3 system? If you already own a PS2, you already have 100% backwards compatibility, with all your save files intact (you can't transfer PS2 save files from the PS2 memory card into the PS3 without a tool that costs at least 20$).
2) Is 40GB sufficient enough? It doesn't matter, because with the money you save (100$ from getting the 80GB edition), you can easily buy yourself a nice 2.5" notebook SATA drive that is at least 120GB for the same price.
3) I have a 40GB PS3, it runs quieter than a 60GB/80GB model due to its hardware revision, less power consumption, and overall is still a PS3 that allows PS3 game playback with Blu-Ray Films.

A 40gig PS3 for $340 after taxes. Where? Doesnt it retail for $399? And dont get it confused with the $100 gift card they're having. You cant use the gift card to subtract from the total, BUT you can use it to buy "stuff" from the store. Are you talking about a used one perhaps? Or an online store that changes their domain name every 5 days and claims they can sell their game inventory for dirt cheap? Hmm?

hey Ipik,i'm a bit off topic but Coke owns Pepsi.. its too sweetYes, compared to the 80gb. The 80gb can play PS2 games, the 40gb cannot. Having double the GB with the 80gb one is also a major plus, since a lot of games have to be installed into the PS3. I have a 60gb, and I have to delete stuff when I want to put new things on it because I have so muany things installed in it.zatoninja
Does that really matter? Please highlight the point of buying a PS3 to play PS2 games on it. If you have an energy guzzling giant like the PS3, then why not use all of it's next-gen power?
Well I'm a 360 gamer mainly and just bought a 40GB PS3 and I can tell you that it is FAR from a "rip-off." If you compare price to all the things you get such as a blu-ray player, wi-fi, wireless controller, free PSN, and built in HDMI. What more do you expect for $399? Now compare this to what you get for an Xbox 360 Premium which cost nearly as much as the 40GB ps3 and you'll see who's really screwing you over..Sony OR > **Microsoft** gamer082009some of your recent post have been postive, i guess you did buy a ps3, now to 40gb no its not a rip-off but if you have enough for 80gb then go with that.
is it ?? or...depends ?Ipik_Fenrisno its a great deal. now if ps2 BC is important to you then get the 80 other wise the 40 is better. you can take the 100 bucks you saved and buy a 150+ gig harddrive. so you will have a 150+gig ps3 for the same price as others paid for 80.And have a spare back up 40gig HDD lol. of course you give up ps2 games but IMHO i could care less. you also lose 2 usb ports and some kind of card reader...meh what ever.i bought my ps3 for ps3 games and BRD movies.
What's the point of playing ps2 games on your ps3? Seems pretty silly to me. Just keep your ps2 for that. If you need extra space
just get an external hard drive.
If you ask me the only down part on the 40 GB is the 2 USB slots. I mean they couldn't add 2 more?

A Guy from here in my city sells them at that price brand new, unopened :D
The 40 gig is definately not a rip, especially at 350, compared to the 540. The 80 GB does come with 40GB more space (which in essence is useless, because most hard core gamer or media centric freak, would probably upgrade, most casual gamers can suffice with 40, my friend has a 20 gig ... hasnt changed it yet and has played a lot of games and demos (obvious deletes them and the installs afterwards) so I'm just saying, that the 40GB difference is nothing special.) The backwards compatability and the MGS4 bundled with is something to note. If you can somehow get away with playing shadow of collosus and FFXII on a friends console. I highly suggest doing that and saving your money. Because MGS4 can be bought for 60+tax, which essentially leaves you 120 dollars to do with what you like.
This is all assuming your going to buy MGS4, but if you arent (dont know why you wouldnt :P) Then theres no question about it, take the 40 gig.navstar29
