Sure. NG Sigma was pretty frikkin hard for me but it was fun so I kept playing.
If a game is too hard because of control issues then I might stop playing. Being frustrated is not fun.
It's not that a game will be too hard for me, but i just don't have the time and patience that i had before to beat them at the hardest difficulty level.
But games i really like, i normaly try to beat t hem at the hardest difficulty level, like God of war, Gears of war, Contra. I could name alot more but you get my point.
Most games arent hard, they just need practice or getting used to them, unless of course they are broken. So far, I havent got to a really hard game, unless I choose the hardest level of difficulty.
Most games though arent naturally hard. But there are others that turn out to be harder. JRPGs normally have this moments, specially the SMT saga thats hard for the most part of the game. Some Final Fantasy have bothersome enemies or bosses, as the hated Malboro, or the Bosses that cast Death or Death Lv.
Then there is the hard due to the enemy increasing their skill, as in Winning Eleven or Uncharted.
Then there is the "cheap" hard. The cheap hard happens mostly in Hack and Slash games and fighting games. Where the AI instead of becoming better just blocks all the time and counters. It is even more bothersome when its you who cant block. Games like Dinasty Warriors use this. In hard, the enemies will just block all the time and the hit you when they get the chance, and since its hard, not only do they have more life, but they also hit for more. In NG the harder difficulties have the enemies blocking more and damaging more, but they are not that technically superior. The thing is, one hit damages more than before.
Another game that had the cheap hard was Gears of War. If you turn on Insane, the game transfers hard as damage. The Locust just do the same as in medium but damage more. The same goes for Resistance. In both games the only difference will be that they hit for much more making it hard to survive due to damage and not due to smart AI.
After that, we have the stupid hard, which imo is the worst of all. Its the hardness that will force to:
1-Follow only the way predetermined by the developers as seen in Turok, or in the Belias fight in FFT.
2-The only way to beat me is to level up like crazy. And this goes to RPGs, but not for the side bosses, Im talking about the standard bosses, and here comes Belias again, but I will add to this the final fight in Valkyrie Profile 2. That boss has some really bothersome cheapshots and in the end, its just a clas s 1 stupid hard. Symphony may know what I mean.
So far, the only game that probed a challenge to me was Uncharted and the Max star in PES 08. In Uncharted the AI will act depending on your position and what you are using and will try to flank you, though there are some kamikaze dudes. And in PES 08, the last star (bought only) gives you an AI that adapts to your gameplay and predicts you strategies meaning that you cant do the same play all the time forcing you to adapt your tactic all the time.
YES!
I play games to relax and have fun, not get pissed.
ANY game where I die over and over trying to beat a boss or get past a certain part = too hard.
ALL games should have difficulty options. Crank it up if you want or turn it down if you want.
The ABSOLUTE BEST example of a GREAT difficulty scale is OBLIVION. I loved the fact that I could tweak the difficulty so precisely. It was like having 100 levels of difficulty. Also, being able to change it mid game was SO NICE. I could ramp it up a bit for more of a challenge or turn it down if there was a part that was giving me some difficulty. I NEVER ONCE got even annoye with that game. LOVE IT.
i could never beat the first level of the terminator game for super nintendo. i couldnt beat the 2nd level of the spider man joins xmen game for super nintendo.
for ps2, i could never do the police milstones in need for speed most wanted on the #1 blacklist guy. but that game was so awesome.
I look at games that are hard as challenges. I'll eventually get them. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is the most challenging game for me right now. I will eventually finish that game! I don't like easy games.
What I also don't like is when people say that games are bad or that they suck because they can't advance because it's too hard. There's a big difference between a game being challenging/hard and unplayable. Most games I have ever played were playable.

I was going to post, agreeing with what you said on Sigma, cheap hard, but then you bought up a better point: Valkyrie Profile 2. Cheap shots was RIGHT on the dot! The game was already brutal when compared to some other games, but to top it off with a boss whose's cheap attack hurts/kills FAR more than his soul crush, then we have a problem. But I still enjoyed the boss and game because he's among my favorite RPG characters.:)
Thanks for the memories.

You are welcome, I did enjoy it too, and the game stays as one of my favorites cause I love the story of it. Not to mention that imo it has one of the best endings too.

I look back at it now, and I remember liking the characters around the same level as me liking FFX's characters due to their more mature look into things. When heroes answers the final boss:
"Nobody asked you to." That party wins my vote as "Top 5 favorite JRPG party members.

I guess that what I liked was that the whole reason he had was just so simple that it may me say wow, finally somebody took the balls to do an bad guy which such a simple reason

What I love about that simple reason, is that he did big things, schemed big, owned big, talked big, and then makes a huge irony out of it with the smallest wish. lol. LOVE IT!
Completing EVERYTHING in Dracula X chronicles is hard, I can't beat the alternate level 5. I beat the game on the regular levels but the alt. lv.5 is insane. Symphony isn't as hard as Rondo though.
God of War on God/Titan mode. I still can't get past the Minataur on God mode.
The original Ghosts N' Goblins for NES is to date, the most difficult game I have ever played. Never got past level 4, out of 7.
Oh yes, there are definitely such things. Nowadays you don't see them so much. But they still happen.codezer0
11 thousand posts?
Why have I never seen you around these parts?
Not with any modern games. With some releases back on the NES days...sure.. Ghosts N Goblins for one. And shinobi on ps2, the final boss pissed me off so much I never beat him.JKnaperek

Are those threads any more...peaceful?

It's just about the same then. -_-
Well, thanks for taking the time to stop by.
you ever played MGS2:S on european extreme? didn't think so.GUNpoint_
Is the Europe/American versions different? If not, then I can take it all the way until those Metal Gears come in.
