Is this problem specific to the 40 gig PS3?

I have 2 friends that have 40 Gb PS3's. They bought them about a month apart 30-50 days ago. They both stopped reading disks within 4 days of each other. I have an 80Gb and another friend has a 20 (We have had no problems). Is this a problem unique to the 40? Was it a bad batch of them? Just trying to figure it out. Let me know if you bought a 40 gig PS3 in the past 50 days or so, and it stopped reading disks.

P.S. They were both playing Call of Duty 4 online when it happened. I guess it's not much of a coinsidence since that's the game we play all the time but it is odd. I saw a couple of people post the topic (Call of Duty 4 broke my PS3). Just thought that was a odd thing. Could there be a virus out there? That is the only thing i've seen make an optical drive quit reading disks.

no problems with mine so far, but it's my secondary console so maybe it has to do with how much they use it?

You see disc errors like that alot in the 40gb and to an extent the 80gb. There are reports of it happening in the 20/60gb but I've never experienced that problem and I've had my 60gb for 7 months now.

I ran into a gentleman at Circuit City who was returning his second 40GB PS3. He said that it they had both refused to read Blu-Ray Discs. I suppose that it might be possible that a bad batch of 40GB's is floating around. Certainly my 60GB has never given a single problem.

Either, the PS3 were tampered with, or the same environmental factors, or the same enclosed space around the PS3s, or the PS3s were so dusty that they turned white, or they were both dropped..ahaha jk jk

That's strange to have them both stop working around the same days of each other let alone a PS3 having problems..

It isn't perfect, but it is by no means a RROD sized problem.

I got my Ps3 1/25/07, and today is 3/5/08. That's about 63 days. *checks Ps3* I only use mine for Ps3 games and Blu-Ray anyway, and those two things work fine. There are four posiblities

1. Since they were online I think they may have a virus of some sort.

2. COD4 has a couple of bugs in it so...

3. Your friend's Ps3s may be apart of that 2% failure rate. I'd send it to Sony, but that's me

4. Faulty eye. Ask your local video game expert to crack it open and find the problem.

If it's none of those... I can't help you. Hope it helps.

Why would a disk read problem be specific to just the 40 gb? If that could be true, it would mean that the other versions don't have a disk drive even, so - no your friends just had bad luck, they're still under warranty so who cares just send them to Sony.
