It's actually harder on the mechanism to spin the disc vertically because the force of gravity on the disc is uneven. A good example is standing on a bed of nails or laying down on them.
I'm at college now so whenever its out its almost always here...with me...alone...thats why i got her layin down! But when im at home for the short periods of time, i let her stand for a bit b4 i lay her (down) again lol
PS3 Lying Down, Wii Standing Up, 360 Lying Down. Actually this is the optimal Layout to allow me to get all my Controllers (4 for each) to Fit on my TV Stand with the 3 Consoles.

I just got my PS3 2dy =) i had my xbox 360 standing up beacuse pleople sed to keep it up beacuse of the air ventolation and wen i had it down it heated up and after a year i got tht 1 ring of death tht e74 and i didnt want to get another xbox so i got a ps3 and i played it once and i had it lying down but im not sure wich way to put it i probz gana try both way's people say lying downa nd people say standing up i fink with the ps3 im not tht sure but i fink tht ur probz can have it both way's idk just my opinon hope this help's =)
Lying down since its how the disc fits in and doesn't fight gravity. That and standing it up seals the bottom exhaust vents. The PS3 can overheat people, just remember that.
I keep mine laying down. I had my wii standing up in my room and it fell off my desk...it's ok though. But i'm not risking that with my playstation 3. I keep it in my living room laying down under my tv stand.
i had my xbox 360 standing up and it was fyn for about 1 year tht it got the 1 ring of death but i fink 360 betta that way but i think with the ps3 it is better wen it lying down im not sure there probz as god standing up it just my opinon so just do it ur way how u feel just dnt keep moving to round beacuse it cud reck it or you could just drop it.
