I never really played jak before. I played the first game for maybe an hour and got bored from collecting. But now with the hd collection, im certainly a little tempted to get back on the franchise

However, theres already a game franchise that has current gen installments and great platforming.....ratchet n clank.......

So im asking you gaming experts tho, how do the old jak games hold up to ratchet n clank? Because i have no idea and could really use some insight

I was just like you at first, I played Jak & Daxter: TPL for an little while a few times and just couldn't get into it. But then it sucked me in, and i loved it. I would definitley play through this one in addition to the second and third

Absolutely not - the first Jak is okay (if a bit too Mario 64-esque) but the sequels are mediocre at best. Ratchet & Clank is consistently good...outside two of the three latest games, at least.

I'm picking up the collection soon, And I remember playing the first one and never completing it so I never played the sequels, so I am hoping to jump back into the series, even if I have to push my self through the premiere installment, all I know is I heard the 2nd one is great. Personally I thing ratchet and clank is better even though I haven't played through the entire series, but that's because ratchet and clank is my favorite of Sony's series.

While I love both series I have to say hell yeah. Jak 3 is my 3rd favorite game of all time, I just got the HD collection yesterday and while I don't have much time to game I'm really happy that I started it.

Jak 3 was fantastic, but so it A Crack in Time. I don't want to have to decide between them.

The first Ratchet and Clank was better than the first Jak IMO, but the second and third weren't. Overall though, the Ratchet and Clank series is better- they actually still make games.

I agree, and I would like to add support for the above statement:

Ratchet and clank has better, addictive gunplay, and has better platforming - in general, the sereis is much more FUN than jak, although both are still excellent platformers.

Besides the first R&C, the games have added RPG elements - that is, you level up your health AND your guns, which turns out to be a VERY addictive process. The guns feel phenomenal as well, with a real bang to them, and each one unique. There's also lock-on and strafing in RC. Although this seems like a minor gameplay addition, keep in mind that all the jak games don't have strafing OR lock-on, which makes the gunplay very awkward (people hate to admit it, but it's true - you'll see once you start playing it - it will cause you many unneeded deaths, especially when adding a lock-on feature would have eliminated this inevitable frustration).

Also, the RC series has more of a focus on platforming than jak does - especially when you consider how much VEHICLE missions there are in both jak 2 and 3. In other words, I would say, without a doubt, that in this case, the jak series lost its focus on what really matters - the platforming. The platforming in RC is EASIER than in jak, but at the same time also feels better, if it's b/c of the smooth controls and level design, or just because it kept things simple. Jak series has you jumping from platform to platform, but in the end the jumping just doesn't feel right. Jak drops too fast, and you can only double jump when you're around full jump height, which is an odd restriction.

HOWEVER, the jak has better voice overs and story/cutscenes. The dialogue is fantastic as well, and each line is delivered in a professional manner.

I would say, in terms of fun, it's RC all the way. Both have great humour, but RC just has gameplay that's more fun. Jak has a better story, which in the end makes its characters more memorable.

I prefer the Ratchet & Clank series but just a bit. Out of the Jak series I really liked the first one.

Ratchet and Clank, hands down. Not to say the Jak series isn't good, but I just don't feel it's as good as R&C's characters, world, and gameplay.

I like Ratchet and Clank better, but is still an incredible series. With the HD collection out, no one has any excuses for not checking it out. As was mentioned, the gameplay is a little under R & C, but the story is hands down better. I also seem to remember there being a lot more variability from mission to mission than R & C.

I only played the first Jak and Daxter and A Crack in Time, but I much prefered Ratchet and Clank. From the looks of it, the Jak series only went downhill after the first...

It's good but Ratchet and Clank is just better. Ratchet and Clank 3 rules all.

I always liked Jak N Daxter. Though I would put Ratchet N Clank right behind it. Followed by Sly games.

Well, both franchises are great.
