When you start up the PS3, press and hold the power button until you hear 2 beeps. This will reset the PS3 and it'll automatically detect the HDMI output.

I just plugged mine in and a screen popped up saying an HDMI cable was detected do you want to use the optimal settings? Go yes and you are done.

Okay. This solution will be slightly annoying but at the end of the day, it will work.

Use both the standard Yellow cable that came with the package and your hdmi cable. Connect them both to the corresponding inputs on the back of your tv.

Switch your tv to video one/2/3. That's usually the name for the standard Yellow connection. Turn the Ps3 on. Go into the video settings and choose hdmi. The screen will go blank. Switch your tv to hdmi 1/2/3. Voila, the picture will reappear and allow you to select all the resolutions that your television supports.

You can now remove the yellow cable. From here on out, you don't require it anymore.

"Catch ya online, dawg".

i dont think any thing is wrong with your ps3 or tv just do the holding down the power butten thing but not for just 2 sec do it untill u hear the 2 beeps it might take longer then 2 sec.
or what you could do is plug in both the composite and HDMI at the same time go the the composite setting on your tv set the PS3 the HDMI in the display or w/e menu then quickly switch to the HDMI setting on your tv and chose yes and then ur done.
hope that works!

This process takes about 1-2 minutes.

Once you switch the Ps3 over from composite to hdmi, switch to your hdmi input quickly and choose to keep settings overwise the console will revert to composite and you'll have to do this all over again.
