Konami uses BitTorrent on the PS3

The PS3 is being used as a bittorrent client in order to spread Konami's Metal Gear Online Beta update without taxing Konami's own servers. Users are downloading and uploading packets or pieces of the puzzle in order to get the complete package, the MGO Beta update.

Only concern is if the servers can't handle that many people can they handle the online beta.... One thing is for sure at this point - the id page cannot handle it. Keeping my fingers crossed about Monday.

And my "bittorent speed" meant the Konami update took 4.5 hrs... original part through PSN like 20mins or something

What they did that wasn't so smart was have the MGO beta available in some PSN stores. This is what caused their site to crash and got so much traffic. It somewhat defeated the purpose to preorder the game, unless there were no preorders available in the region. I don't mind people getting the opportunity to get the beta but they should have preordered just like everyone else. Now it's a crapshoot to register for the game and konami id. :?

Well then the preorder deal should have been global instead of US only ;) I would have gladly preordered for the beta.. well I'm planning to preorder anyway.. just waitin to see if there's going to be a limited edition in Europe :)

It took me all ****ing day yesterday to get the stupid update.

When it was finished, I went back to the XMB and looked at the size of the BETA.

It went from 400MB to 1.5GB!!!

WTF kind of an update was this?!

Sounds like an entire do-over of the entire BETA.

Anyways, I will pay for PSN if I can get better service. So far PSN showed me that it is complete garabge.

It's horrible.

If it was not for blu-ray and MGS4 I would not even have a PS3.

1) The original download through PSN was 756mb not 400

2) The second download was through Konami servers and completely unrelated to PSN. Only way it could have been related is if PSN limited the amount of space for the beta, but I doubt it since there has been over 1GB downloads before.

Finally got my Konami ID last night at 1:30 am (CMT). Went through fairly quickly. So I guess try around 2:30 on the east coast and 12:30 on the west. Good Luck!!shaunsdu

They did something last night that improved things. I wasn't even close around 8-9pm EST and kept trying over and over again and suddenly it loaded great twice in a row (had messed up the password so had to redo). Then it just seemed a lot faster after that...
