If it wasn't safe I think we'd be hearing alot reports of peoples PS3s bricking by now. Same goes for any system update.

I've updated mine to 3.50 and I haven't had any problems but from reading that thread it seems people are having problems running some third party controllers such as the PS2 controller adapter after the new update.. One poster says,

"I think the latest system update disabled non sony products to prevent hacking/jalbreaking"

So if you don't own any non sony devices for your PS3.. It shouldn't effect you..

I updated my 60 gig system within the first hour or so of it's release and never had a single problem. Many problems can be from non Sony devices being used that weren't authorized by Sony. Then some problems were from the laser burning out which can happen anytime just like when a light bulb blows for no real reason.

Didn't even know an update was due, but I heard that the Slim models don't have as many issues with updates. Any truth to that?

This is the update from late Sept right? Part of that whole jailbreak thing. Plus other updates as well. I downloaded the update. Have not had any issues. I think this might be just isolated happenings. I did hear about third party accessories getting effected, but since I do not use them, everything for me has worked just fine. I would not be to concerned about it.

i can help people with the disc problem thing if i know when the update was.

if it was before sept and after august then i can help you fix the disc redin

start a demo or playstation home then go on xmb the disc should show up then you can play game (im not sure if it will work on slim but it worked on my 40gb)

you will have to this every time you want to play

to resolve go on recovery menu and do section 3 this will help the disc reading .
