Suggestions? Just assume I don't mind what "era" the game is set and focus on gameplay.

Here are what I see as my best choices for my lovely PS3:

Eldar Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Dragon Age: Origins

Fallout 3

Valkyria Chronicles

Final Fantasy VIII

Let me know any others that might be better. I want to buy one today!

Get Yakuza 3, then get Valkyria Chronicles. Skip oblivion as the leveling system is absolutely horrible (the worst in any rpg I have played to date). I'm currently playing Dragon Age and Fallout 3 right now on PC. I would say DA excels more atthe story compared to Fallout 3 which I feel as better gameplay.

I recommend a JRPG since this will be your first. Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Dragon Age are all fantastic, but the real RPG mechanics are in the JRPG's (my opinion, anyways.) Valkyria Chronicles is a strategy RPG, and is kinda revolutionary in the sense that it blends RPG, Strategy, and TPS in a very brilliant way. Final Fantasy VIII is a classic, as is Final Fantasy VII. You can't go wrong with them. I also suggest Final Fantasy Tactics from the PSN as well, being one of the pioneer RPG/Strategy games, it still holds up remarkably well. Star Ocean 4 is good, albeit has a few problems, and Final Fantasy XIII is fantastic. It's linear, which a newcomer will probably find very welcoming to get into.

Interesting. I guess I didn't really consider a JRPG vs. WRPG. Probablly a good idea to stay more linear for my first time, even though it would be cool to be able to wander around aimlessly.

While oblivion is an insanely good game. I wouldnt go with that for your first. Its pretty glitchy and outdated now. FFXIII might be a good choice. Or of you dont know much about the genre, try FFVII or FFVIII on the psn first, very cheap for some of the greatest games of all time (arguably).

Why did Valkyria Chronicles get slightly lower reviews than some of the ones I listed? But everywhere I look, from a "user" perspective it got really high reviews. I also didn't conisder the PSN for the old school games. Good call.

Don't get me wrong, WRPG's are fantastic as well, but JRPG's just have a style that welcomes newcomers and keeps vets hooked. I really recommend you download FFVII and/or FFVIII from the PSN for your first RPG. They're both amazing games, both have well written and deep stories, and best of all: they cost $10 each. Better you spend $10 than $60+ and find out RPG's aren't your forte.

I dont know, the game is awesome. Its not your normal RPG because it includes tactical movement in the equation. Check some videos in youtube or even the video review here to check the gameplay and see if you like it.

Tons of users (myself included) loved Valkyria Chronicles for its amazing artwork, original combat and so on.

Good advice. Thanks. Looks like Final Fantasy XII might be the starting point. I knew it received widespread acclaim. It will also be easier to just download! Maybe buy Valkyria Chronicles after that?

Personally, i loved oblivion. i played it for over 100 hours. lots of sidequest, and a very big world. try and get the game of the yeard edition of this one, if u decide on

i am playing through fallout 3, and dragon age at the moment. i know i will like fallout 3, its my type of game. i like games with open world gameplay, and is similar to oblivion.

final fantasy is ok. the cut scenes are very nice. i only played 3-4 hours so far, so i cant really comment.

dragon age is a game that focuses on story. its music, and storytelling is very good. although the graphics arnt that great. there are many moral choice, its something along the lines of the older knights of the old republic games on xbox.

i didnt really like valkyria chronicles. but many people have loved the game

the one game not on your list that u should think about,,,and possibly get is demon souls. it won game of the year here on gamespot. its a hard game, but very, very good.

from the psn store, there are 3 very good rpgs. my personal 2nd fav of all tiume final fantasy 7. it is a great game, if u like story, andgreat characters. the combat is very easy to learn, and satisfying. i still play this game. i can beat the final guy with ease, but still love playing it

personalliy i would get in order

demon souls

oblivion

fallout 3

dragon age

final fantasy 13

valkyria chronicles

Actually, he can just go download the Valkyria Chronicles demo for free right from the PSN store. I still play the demo, as I've yet to get the game (getting it next week, though.)

I think you meant VII, and not XII? Though XII for the PS2 was great too, heh. But yeah, definitely grab VII, and go download the free Valkyrica Chronicles demo off the PSN to see if you like it, though I can't imagine anyone disliking it. Terrific game.

Thanks for the input. Is Demon Souls so frustratingly hard that I would be turned off to the genre? Also, I do PREFER open world type games, but I guess I wouldn't want to be too overwhelmed. Is Oblivion overhwhelming at first?

Yeah, but the demo is horrible :(

I didnt got the game right away because of it, had to wait until a friend bought it so i could play it and check the full game.

BUT, TC, if you play the demo keep this in mind.... The game is not really that way besides the basic gameplay, that is just 1 skirmish map that your only objective is capturing the enemy flag. The full game has 22+ missions, very varied and with different objectives / approaches to them, especial conditions (sandstorms and so on), it rewards the good use of each class and really lets you apreciate each one of them and their respective advantages and good strategy. TONS of characters to choose and weapons, TONS of upgrades for each one of them and the Tank. And so on.

The demo is nothing but the most simple skirmish map and no customization at all.

And get FF7 from the PSN... only 9.99$ for over 50 hours of play, and its an awesome game. Also, it lets certain amount of exploration (its satisfying) without derrailing you too much from the main path, so even if you explore you wont get lost. It has a really good balance.

Eh, true. But it showcases its unique combat, which made me love it. There's also DLC for VC, correct? Nothing like extending a good game.

Yes (also, i edited a little the comment to clarify that it does show the basic gameplay, but at its simplest)

The DLC is good.

oblivion might be to overwhelming. the map is huge. and u can go anywhere at any time during gameplay. there are different guilds to join, an arena you can fight in. there is also about 215 quests to complete. the map of the game is 16 square miles, and over 200 dungeons. its a very huge game world. that is not counting the expansion that comes with the game of the year edition.

While FFVII isn't my favourite FF, it's certainly high up there. Final Fantasy are very story oriented, and are packed with quality. FFVII will serve as a great starting point for your RPG endeavors.

Just go with Oblivion and start with the easy setting. Oblivion let's you do whatever you want once you get out of the tutorial dungeon. Check out some videos for the games your deciding to buy.

I'll decide for you. Grab FFVII off of the PSN for $10 :P If you enjoy it, keep on going and get FFVIII. If you enjoy that as well, then you clearly will enjoy the rest of the Final Fantasy franchise (that's a lot of good RPG's to got through.)

I would think Final Fantasy XIII is pretty unforgiving for newcomers, it is so slow and too linear at the very start. If you are familiar with shooters try Fallout 3 to ease you in, then work through Oblivion and on to Dragon's Age.

The opinions are so varied because each ff is different, so players may like more the characters, story or gameplay mechanics in one more than the others.

Thats why i suggest FF7 as the 1st one. I loved the battle system and how to use magics and stuff (by materias), also the music and story + characters. Its a great starting point in the FF games.

lol i thought this would be a terrorism topic. but, i would say: fallout. its my only RPG, as i dont generally enjoy RPGs, particularily those with turnbased combat, which seems to be about 90% of the genre. fallout however, rescued my opinion of the genre. its great, and massive.

You should start with FFVII, if you get addicted, go play FFX then continue on FF13. Yes I am recruiting you in the SE side

Suggestions? Just assume I don't mind what "era" the game is set and focus on gameplay.

Here are what I see as my best choices for my lovely PS3:

Eldar Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Dragon Age: Origins

Fallout 3

Valkyria Chronicles

Final Fantasy VIII

Let me know any others that might be better. I want to buy one today!

out of this list the only real RPGs are oblivion and fallout, because they stay close to what a RPG should be, you create you character from scratch, you choose all of the attributes and skills by hand, you have a lot of side-missions to acomplish, which you can take in any order you want, and in most of them you can decide how to proceed, you can talk your way out or you can do battle.

the next closest thing would be dragon age, but valkirya chronicles is an strategy game and FFXIII... well, you play pre-defined characters, with pre-defined names in a pre-defined path, the only choice you have in that game is what to do in the battles and that's it(and that's not even required, you can jus hit the auto-battle button and finish the game), I would call it an action/adventure game, but no, it's not an RPG by any means, last FF most close to a RPG was the 6th.

Actually all Jrpgs these days can be just loosely called RPGs at all imo.

Also I think Oblivion is a mess because of the leveling system, no matter how high level you are the monsters level with you, so what's the point? but it's fun none the less.

not saying any of these games are bad, actually they are great, just pointing you to what a real RPG is.

Thanks for all the input. I'm leaning toward FFVII and Oblivion. I'm going to sit down and watch the GameTrailer reviews for each game and make my final decision. It certainly helps seeing the gameplay footage.

I'm really torn between wanting the open world feel or starting with the traditional linear RPG. I LOVE open world games, and I'm also starting to prefer the medieval feel for RPG's (mainly because I used to love playing Age of Empires etc...) However, FFVII has so much acclaim it's hard not to play it, especially if it's as epic as Metal Gear Solid. The main reason I think I will avoid Fallout 3 is because I already have too many FPS's.

Keep any advice coming... at least until I buy something, ha.

I like your perspective. Is the leveling system with Oblivion a dealbreaker? What would be your Top 3 if you had to choose for me?

oh you were talking about ff7/8, I saw the 3 Is in there and instantly though it was the XIII, didn't realised it was a VIII heh, yeah ff7 is more close to an RPG but still not quite, the good thing is you can get it for what 10 bucks? on the psn store, so yeah start with that one.

but for a true RPG experience you'd have to play the ultima series on the PC, or maybe some of the older elder scrolls games, morrowind is great, not much like those nowadays.

I like your perspective. Is the leveling system with Oblivion a dealbreaker? What would be your Top 3 if you had to choose for me?

Artof_War

No, not a dealbreaker, it just fells a little weird, actually if you have a PC that can handle it I sugest you play there instead, because there are mods that fix many of the shortcomings of the original game, but even without mods the game is still very deep and fun imo.

And about a top 3, out of your list, and taking into consideration the RPG thing I would say

1- fallout 3

2- oblivion

3 - Dragon Age

but if I could suggest another one on the ps3 that would be Demons Souls at number 2 pushing Dragon Age out of the top 3 heh, it's not a 100% rpg experience but it's closer, maybe even at number 1, well at least I know I enjoyed it far more then fallout

either fallout 3, valkyria chronicles, or FFXIII, note that that even though they are all rpgs, they are very different in gameplay, but i found them all fun

None of those. This is your very first RPG? Valkria Chronicles could be ok if you're into strategy and tactics, but I'd say get something much older. I would recommend Shining Force or 1 or 2, doesnt matter which. I'm sure you can find it almost anywhere, its old but one of the best.
