This article may be a bit old, but it's still relevent to today.  I especially like Mark's views that the prices of games should be going down, and not up.  Here are a few quotes that i like:

Mark Rein concerning Blu-Ray:

"Unreal Tournament was 6GB compressed. Next Generation games are going to be 20GB plus, and how we're going to fit them on DVD9's I don't know, they'll probably be a few of them. On the PS3, we're going to be using the majority of the space on those Blu-ray disks."

Mark Rein thinks that the prices of games should be going DOWN, not up:

"I hate to hear people talk about "We're going to charge more because it costs more". Sure, it costs more because you're developing using better technology and making better games. Not just because you're wasting money developing your own tools...

...there's other technology you can buy, not just ours. People who are trying to re-invent the wheel are spending way more money than they should. Our own games, we're seeing a 30-50% increase in cost, but we're expanding our teams and make much better games.

UT 2007...[is] not processed three times, and it's not costing us 30 million USD. There's no excuse for us to raise the price....When we worked with Atari, they sold our games for $39 and we actually agree with that policy. Reduce the price of our game, not increase it.

It's a little more difficult to do that on consoles because you're paying royalties to the manufacturers, but you're paying royalties to subsidise the machine and marketing. If we were able to share with them the money they make from rentals and retail, that could help lower the price. I hate hearing people want to raise the price....My point is that if we can make it more affordable, we can grow the market. One of the ways we can do that is to use Unreal Engine 3 and take advantage of the productivity gains you can take from that."

thanks for the article.  This also proves what the Guys from Insomniac games had to say about blu-ray needed for gaming as well.

because theres so much more work involved, therefore, more employees. making a game these days is like making a movie in some ways. this is just one of many developers who have said that blu-ray will be needed this gen.

Glad to see some industry workers thinking logically instead of going around saying "PS3 sucks" and wasting time..

Either way, it's going to get cheaper eventually anyways. Especially with the number of bought units rising. I remember PS2 games being 80 (79.99 before taxes) bucks when it first started (here in Canada) and look how much they've dropped? And even PS3 games don't make that price.

It's neive to think the DVDs will provide enough space for games over the next couple of years.

I think the the industry has had enuf with this PS3 bashing and negativety. Its time to rise up to microsoft viral marketing and unlawfull marketing practice. The developer knows more than what we all know, not some random person in the forums spreading rumors and lies in the internet.

I think having Blu-ray is awesome, but you can still do a lot with less. Xbox Live Arcade had a 50 MB limit on games. One of those games used Unreal Engine 3 and was really impressive at under 50 MB. 9 GB is 184 times larger than 50 MB. You can get a lot of good game in that amount of space. Granted, you can get 10 times more game on Blu-ray. So, what am I babbling about. Blu-ray is awesome, but DVD-9 will do alright on the 360 I say. I won't shed a tear if a game spans two or three discs.

I agree. I wish MS had gone HD-DVD or Blu-ray when they made the 360 but I don't think not going HD-DVD is going to destroy the 360. Look at the gamecube it had most of my favorite games from last gen that looked better than most PS2 games and the discs only held 1.4 GB. Disc space is important but can easily be overcome by great gameplay and design. Ocarina of Time was 32MB on cartridge and FF7 took up around 2 gigs on 3 CDs and both were incredible games in their own ways.

Mark Rein joins the Insomniac, Kojima and Team Ninja team of "blu-ray is needed".

What devs have expressed them selfs so far saying blu-ray was a gimmick or not needed?

Almost none. Hell, even the guys from Mass Effect said that they had initially thought getting the game on one disc would be impossible, but that they have barely managed to cram it all onto one DVD9 now (with rumors of them cutting material to do so).

Nice.  Someone posted something about a month ago about a developer from EA saying that Blu-Ray is a big plus, and once it is fully utilized, it will be a determining factor against the 360.
