[QUOTE="2headedhawaiian"] I played consistently for about a day or two. Once GTA IV came out, MGO didn't stand a chance. Maybe it's because it's a very early incarnation of the game, and maybe they can fix a lot before it releases, but MGO did not really impress me. I really like the SOP system, but that's about it. Everything else, at this point in time, is subpar: graphics, weapons, sound, animations, gameplay.
I'm not trying to flame at all. I'm a huge MGS fan. But the online component does not look to really compete on the same level as modern shooters. I actually just went back to COD4 this weekend for the first time in about a month, and I was surprised at how great it is after all the time I've spent on it already. I've put in around 2 full days with COD4's online, and I'm still not sick of it, and I'd put in around 4 hours with MGO before I got sick of it. MGO has a lot of catching up to do.

honestly at first i didn't like it either.. i thought it felt clunky and slow.. and things needed to be worked out.. then i also got out of the call of duty mentality.. its not a run and gun first person shooter.. its a 3rd person tactical espionage game.. and it rewards teamwork a great deal..
after realized all the possiblies and strategies.. i spent more time fooling around to see what i can do.. and i fell in love with it.. and honestly i think the graphics are up to par with most multiplayer games out there.. sure its not call of duty 4 on graphics.. but then again.. its a not a FPS.. and it has customizable character looks. (which i hope they allow you to change and edit in the final version).. which means they have to focus more handeling different types of character models.. and the maps are a lot bigger than COD.. and besides.. its a beta.. so its not the final product..
and honestly to me it looks better than Rainbow Six vegas 2 online.. which looks like it uses cardboard cutouts of grenades and stuff... and it also looks better thatn GRAW 2 online..
i think its a great change of pace from COD4 which i have been tired and sick of for about 2 months now.. doesn't mean i dont like it any more... i just need a break.. and MGO was perfect.. although i was distracted from it by GTA from time to time.. however i did get some valuble time in..
First of all, the reason I'm comparing it to COD4 is that they are both supposed to be fun online shooters. I am very aware that tactical, stealth based shooters should not be judged on the same basis as a run-n-gun FPS, but one thing they should both offer to be successful is ENJOYMENT.
This is what I have based my MGO impressions on. After many, many, many hours of playing COD4 online, it is still enjoyable for me. After playing four hours of MGO, I was tired of it and actually forgot the beta was still going on until this thread told me it was over.
Like I said, strategically, MGO has promise. The SOP system is really cool and useful. Could MGO end up being great? Absolutely. The beta was unimpressive, on its own merit. The graphics were bland. The character movements were stiff (yeah, I know, that's how MGS has always been, blah blah blah). The aiming reticule is huge and imprecise. I'm sure anyone who has spent even a few minutes playing the beta ran into a situation where controls and aiming imprecision led to ridiculous close-quarters battles as two guys just dove around and weakly attempted CQC only to grasp or jab a rifle but into thin air.
And a stealth based, tactical, third-person shooter should have better cover mechanics. I'm sure it will work brilliantly in MGS4's single player campaign, but it's utterly useless online.
MGS4 FTW! MGO beta FTL.
