I've just started playing Oblivion and I'm really enjoying it but I have a quick question/observation that I was wondering if people could kind of shed some light on...As much fun as Oblivion is, I can't help but think it would be REALLY cool if it was a MMORPG like World of Warcraft...what are the advantages of developing a single player game in our current online gaming world? WHat are the major gameplay differences between single and online? I've played too few of both to know, so I'm wondering if others can shed some light here. My guess is single player games can have MUCH better story experiences and more detailed worlds etc...I just love the comraderie of the MMORPG experience and kind of miss it with Oblivion...

thanks

Oblivion as an MMO would be awful.. I'm thankful that Bethesda still remember about great single player experiances.

1. mmorpgs are alot mor repetetive, click and wait combat usually

2. Mmmorpg communication has to be done very carefully, no npcs yelling, hello alex how was your day, coz not everyone is called alex

3. mmorpgs have monster killing areas unlike rpgs that dot monsters around this is done for player levels

4. mmorpgs are filled with helping charecters

5. mmorpgs dont have great hraphics

6. therfes more i cant be botherd to mention

I think Oblivion would be horrible if it was an MMORPG.  You would not be able to do things like dark brotherhood quests because of over population.  Making the game more like Guild Wars would help (individual instances inside the server for your group), but Guild Wars isn't even classified as a MMORPG.  Things like sneak would be non-existant, and lock-picking would be pointless since there would be too many people running in and out of every door anyway.

Just leave Oblivion the way it is, unless you're talking mods.  Mods ftw (except the online mod).

Also, and this bugs me a lot, is no noobs at all...I can't count the number of times some guy has asked me how to pull up his Invetory screen while in Diablo. And vice versa, we don't want to be the noob asking stupid questions. But I thinkg Oblivion just wouldn't work as an online game at all. It's not meant to be that...it would do, as stated before, an aweful job.

Thanks for the responses, I get what everyone is saying...the single player RPGs are just richer, better gameplay experiences than the online rpgs..the more I play the more I will see that a game like Oblivion is impossible online and would suffer if made that way

That's not true at all. Oblivion has X amount of hours, but I'm sure I could easily put triple the amount of time in an MMORPG. I have around 30 days of gameplay clocked in to WoW, so there goes the richer argument. As for a better gameplay experience, Oblivion is limited to single player, but you can have a lot of people playing together in an MMORPG (that means lots of noobs though :|). They're different genres with different experiences, but none is by any means better than the other.

Oblivion is over 100 + hours of gameplay dude. It is fantastic. Thank God for devs that craft perfect single player games.

Please no online play.  With Oblivion, I can sit down and start playing immediately.  With WOW or Everquest, I have to wait 45 minutes before a group is created only to have one person bail out of the group 20 minutes into a grind and then have to wait 10 minutes for a replacement.   Or, spend 45 minutes waiting for a group only to have 3 12 year olds start screwing around instead of playing serious.  No more online for me.

Well Two Worlds is kinda like Oblivion but with online co-op. MMORPG would just ruin games like these, but co-op is kinda neat. Hopefully TW will be good.
