Does anyone see any BIG MMORPGS making its way to the consoles. If theyre as big as on PC, will Blu-Ray be the only thing capable of holding all the data? What does everyone think about how this will work and what they will have to cut from the games if anything? I guess Champions Live will be one of the first to test this theory out.

I read in Game Informer a while back that we will probably never see a MMORPGS due to monthly service fee's and expantions. I think MMORGPGS require a lot of work to keep up and running, and that companies make a lot of money being able to charge a monthly fee. Maybe I can find a link or something to post later.

It's not a size issue. Most mmo games aren't that big in terms of what you install on your com. Most of the stats and data are held on the developer's servers. I think the reason why there aren't more mmos on the 360 is because some people feel kinda iffy about paying for live and then paying a monthly fee for their game account. Since psn is free it acts more like a pc. You only have to pay the monthly service for the game itself. It also makes microtransactions a bit easier.

Its possible, but very unlikely. The problem is with the subscriptions/licensing. Just have to wait and see.

Well, I found the issue of Game Informer that talked about it titled "Why are console MMOS still M.I.A" by Adam Biessenea. Although I couldn't find a link, I can summarize what I'm reading on pg 22 of thisSeptembers issue:

Basically "...No one wants to foot the bandwith bill for millions of multi-gigabyte downloads, many of which will never generate a dollar of revenue...Microsoft and Sony want a cut and its a sizeable one. The lower-profile companies that make up the bulk of free-to-play development exist on thin profit margins...The cut companies would charge for the PSN and XBLA would choak the games out of the market." It also talks about having to train PC developers who make the MMORPG's how to develope them for the consoles and adapting their designes.

I wish I could have found the link for ya'll, but I couldn't. Instead...I found a link for LOTR Online! For those who don't want to make the effort of clicking on the link, it talks about Craig Alexander, Turbine's VP of studio development hasstated that their unnamed project has been 18 months in the making and has cost the studio $20 million. We might see a MMORPG as soon as 2011. Cheers!

Everybody does know that Final Fantasy 14 is gonna be an MMORPG right? and its only on the ps3. I don't know if the exclusive thing is b/c it can only run on the ps3 or if it's just b/c square enix made a deal with sony but yeah.

I actually played it for 2 years on my PS2! It was impossible to solo unless you were a Beastmaster class. It was extreamly often to sit in one spot waiting for 2-4 hours waiting for someone to invite you to their party so you could level. Armor and enemies all look the same except for their colors. Despite all this, the game was very addicting and the community was one of the best I have ever seen. I don't think it was that big of a success in the US as it was other contries though.

I read an article that said that Square is fixing a bunch of the bugs from the earlier MMO FF game that they did. IDK how true it is. Obviously b/c the game hasn't come out yet haha.

getting back to the OP.

Wasnt FFXI on the ps2 and xbox360? that was a huge mmorpg. I played it on the PC. Sure the PS3 has the best storage capability for a large game like that (a la removable/upgradable HDD) but I would not say that it is the only console that can do a MMORPG.

I am excited for DC universe but Im not holding my breath. The buzz around that game has not been favorable from whats seeping out.

FFXIV
DC Universe Online
The Agency
Free Realms
Ps3 is getting a lot of MMORPGs love, though Blu-Ray isnt important for mmorgs as the HDD is. Consoles are at the point where fully featured mmorpgs are easily possible; You do remember FFXI came out on the ps2? Right?

as far as im concerned MMORPG's belong on PC. Purely for control issues e.g spell macros, UI interaction etc.

Yeh but developers can make those customizable in the UI via updates, and you can keyboards and a mouse with PS2, I think it would work if someone really put the time and love into it.
