preferably both co-op campaign and split screen online multiplayer. I convinced my friend to get a PS3 so we could play online, and now he likes gaming so much (not a huge gamer, but loves shooters) that he wants to play with his brother but the shooters he has (battlefield, medal of honor, CoD4) don't have split screen. Sorry for the backstory, but i would really appreciate any info (all i can think of is halo, and that's not much help, now is it)
For now I would get a cheap game, such as Resistance: Fall of Man, and come November 4th, I would pick up Resistance 2, which will have a campaign dedicated to co-op gameplay for up to 8 players online (which could be used splitscreen offline with a friend as well).
The hard copy, not digital download, because that version doesn't have co-op online.

WTF are you talking about? Both versions are completely identical. I have the digital download and the ONLY time I play is when I have friends over for splitscreen.
Anyway, Resistance: Fall of Man, Rainbow Six Vegas (and Vegas 2) and Army of Two have offline splitscreen co-op. Right now, Warhawk is the only game with online splitscreen (that I know of).
His best bet will probably be to wait for Resistance 2 or CoD: World at War which have loads of co-op and competitve modes .
