i brought home a 250gb ps3 with the move starter pack, res evil 5 gold edition and gran turismo 5,

firstly i set up wireless connection, works fine, but signs me out randomly, then i can only reconnect if i turnps3 off and back on?

gran tursimo took 40 odd mins to install (which i cant really complain since it wasnt madatory and it did warn me), i love the game so far but what the heck is up with them blocky shadows (it looks like the game is glitched) and where is the vehicle damage, i just bounce off cars?

set up the move, seems fine, then i try some demos but have to install each one off the disc taking another half hour. more than i spend on the games, but the move is cool.

so i put in res evil gold move edition, guess what, another 20 mins install. by this point i was so frustrated i give up.

im going to try again today, hopefully it'll be a better experience since everything is now installed and ready to go.

my point is if i wanted a pc i would have bought one, i dont expect all this from consoles.

 Installation is great for cutting down load times, and unless you just jump from game to game alot its worth it in the long run... Just anticipate that games need to install and plan to play accordingly.. Of course a 10 minutes demo isn't worth installing, also if you want to best experience with online and downloading i'd strongly suggest going with a wired connection.

Half of my games don't even have an install option or a mandatory install. It's just unlucky pick ups of games from your side since all of them had a required install.

Damage in GT5 unlocks at levels 20 and fully at 40. But I think there will be a patch soon that lets you set the damage manualy. There are rumors they will make the shadows better but not sure about that. Theres an option to swith between sharp and smooth graphics somewhere but I havent tried it yet. Installations make the load times faster and you have to bear with it before playing some games. Also, pretty much every game will require you to patch it before playing.

thanks for the replys,

everything is cool today now that everything is installed, grand turismo is fantastic, i did a bit of research and like someone said things like the shadows will be patched and i havent unlocked damage yet. res evil works great with the move controller!

i havent always got access to a wired connection, so if anyone could help me, i sign in straight away when i turn machine on, everything is fine, it will randomly sign me out after about 10, 20 mins and i cant sign back in, keeps saying dns error or something after 5 mins of trying, but if i turn machine off and back on i sign in straight away again. ive tried two different wi-fi connection points so its not that. its really annoying, any help or suggestions would be appreciated..!

Glad everythings ok game wise. It's good to see that you're happy with gt5 caus I want to pick it up and have had some question marks over it. I think with the Internet it's probably a connection problem. Some one suggested wired which you might try or maybe moving the ps3 closer to the modem may help...good luck

yeah i was a bit worried about gt5, ive read a bit of negativity, i expected it to be a bit stiff and mechanical but all i can say is ive had plenty of fun, the racing is fantastic, there are so many options and things to do it can be a bit overwhelming (in a good way), the karts are a blast, im just trying a bit of nascar. ive only been playing for a few hours and havent scratched the surface yet. i love the cash/level system, you feel rewarded for everything you do. im extremely happy with the game!

blame the game developers..it seems to be popular these days to have mandatory install.. i prefer console games being playable on the spot too, but nowadays you won't find a lot of games that don't need to be installed.. it just makes the game runs more smooth i guess..

I don't mind install times, gives me a chance to flick through the manual that comes with the game. A word of advice if you don't like install times - Don't play so much stuff within a day :P

Lol, when I first got my PS3, it broke after nine days, and I lost all my data, and for the next PS3 I had to spend like four hours installing MGS4's online play, you'll get used to installs, they're not that bad, they're usually only around 10 minutes then you never need to install again.

The thing is many times the connection problems could be the way the router handles the data or the way the provider handles data. Packet loss can be the biggest problem and hard to nail the main culprit down causing packet loss. Then there are other things that can cause problems. If people are having problems sometimes if they take some time searching a web site such as AfterDawn.com they can find ways of correcting the problems. I've spent hours on there site and found nice little jewels for getting the most out of my local network.

there are many, many better thing i could complain about, but this is a ps3 forum, i was just surprised more than complaining. now i realise that gt5 taking 40mins was a one off and it was certainly worth the wait lol.

im old enough to remember i had to load a game from tape for 10mins every time i wanted to play it, so im sure i can cope with an install :)

im very very happy with the ps3, just wish i could sort out the wireless problem now thats all..!

thanks, ive wrapped my router antennas in tin foil (and my windows just to bounce the signal back), but apart from picking up some strange extraterrestrial signals it didnt solve my problem :(

i guess this is not a common problem...

Shadows and damage and i'll be happy as hell... I couldnt care less about the standard cars but it's a niggle worth mentioning... Shadows are just plain crap and the car damage system is just patheticly employed to kick in at lvl 20(40 for realism)... Silly silly move by PD...

doubt it's this that is the problem then...ahve you tried hard wired connection yet just to see how stable the connectivity is...if your connection to PSN is up and down with that too than I would contact your ISP.

i think your internet needs some setting up. mine used to sign me out randomly , i think you have to call your router company, or sony customer service. you might need to open up some ports. i gave up with routers, i just use a long ethernet wire from my modem.

A lot of people do not seem to understand WHY the PS3 requires mandatory installs for most games. The blu-ray player is amazing and awesome technology that gives us a lot of great benefits. Unfortunately though, it has very slow read speeds in the PS3s. This is why MS gets away without mandatory installs on most of there games. The XBOX DVD read speeds are lightning fast by comparison. Although I dont really enjoy long installs, I'd take blu-ray over DVD anyday!

gt5 installs a whopping 8 gb + on your hdd, try doing it with a single dvd... :P ps3, although it is considered a console, is a computer with the world's cheapest risc processor, namely ibm's cell processor, with a ps3 os, an hdd, ram, all the bells and whistles, it is not a simple console... :)

Install times make load times fewer and quicker. It's a small price to pay for a better gaming experience, but all developers should let us choose whether we like full, partial, temporary or no installs. It's annoying when they force the full install every now and then.

Vehicle Damage will be unlocked when you reach level 20, Vehicle Damage that affects the car performance will be unlocked somewhere between level 40-50.
