The blu ray drive just stopped working while playing a blu ray movie. It can still eject and suck the games in but the drive does not work. The rest of the system seems to still be fine and I can play the few downloaded games I have. I'm 6 months past warranty so It will cost me $177 Canadian for Sony to fix it. I just bought a new one at wal mart instead, but I might still send it in and return the new one before my 30 days are up.

Has this happened to anyone else?

No, I can't play disc based games because the drive is DEAD. If you stick a game in nothing happens the drive does not work at all the PS3 does not even acknowledge the game is in the system. If heard of this happening a lot to PS3s near launch but I guess I just used it too much and it died of over use.

BEWARE!

Once you get it back you should use it all day (specially if it is the same one you sent) in order to make sure it won't break down outside the 90 day warranty it comes with.

Yep. My launch 60gig PS3 failed last night...just like that, the screen became scrambled and then froze. Now there is no picture at all. I set up a online service request at playstation.com. It will cost $150.00 to repair.

The blu-ray died on me too like a year ago, had the 80 gig motoratorm PS3. Thankfully I was under warranty so no harm except for the no gaming for 2 weeks. Its like a thing of the past to me now.

You most likely just need to replace the Blu-Ray reader because it could have failed. The cost isn't that bad for the parts and it's not that hard to replace.

You mean for myself the fix the PS3? Sony charges $177 no matter how big or small the problem is.

How would I go about doing it myself? That seems very unlikely.

If it can't read discs but it still works then maybe the eye is covered in dust? I'm not sure if the PS3 even HAS this but this was the case with my PS2. This doesn't really seem like a Hardware failure case to me.

No the blu ray drive is DEAD. If it was dirty it would have trouble reading discs and tell you to clean them. My PS3 longer even shows a disc is in the system. It's as broken as broken can be.

If you don't like it don't reply. Don't TROLL!

There is a reason people conplain about the blu ray drive dying and that is because it is a seriousand common problem with the PS3.

Yeah the laser in the earlier models was(and still can be,but they improved the process used to manufacture the laser diode)effectively defective, and most had a very shortened life and went poof easier than expected.I have replaced the laser many times myself, and if Youre careful its not hard. The laser itself is about 70-90 on ebay or such(kes-400a or kes-410aca),just have to be careful and not static damage the laser diode(carpet-walking static will zap it),and put the drive caseing back together properly(one gear-thing on the top half needs to be positioned correctly when putting it back together),and youre set.

Thats true I was USING it. THATS what happened.I keep it a foot and a half away from any objects so itdoesn't over heat. I treated my PS3 VERY well. You better watch out you are probably going to be next.
