I put a Christmas movie DVD in, and it loaded, then made this popping noise and sent me back to the XMB, but only with the category icons. I could choose which category I wanted, but there were no icons in each category! I tried to shut it off, and after waitng 3 mintues I had to hit the switch on the back. When I turned it back on, it said "The Hard Disc will be Rebuilt - Press the PS button." So I hit the PS button, and it went to the restoring Hard Drive percent bar, and then jumped back to the XMB, with everything exactly how it was, all intct and everything. I was not happy with my PS3 last night lol. Anyone have similar stories?

Interesting, glad it worked out OK for you.

Whenever the last firmware update came out I was downloading it but at the time I guess it was raining because all of a sudden mid download the power in the house shuts down :o. I thought my system would be toast when I turned it back on but it turned out being OK.

Not like that. But last night my new slim started to not recognize anything blu tooth. Headset or even the controllers would only work when plugged in. And not cuz they werent charged. I always have one charging. It was bizzare.

I had a big issue yesterday but it was with a Blu ray disc. I ordered the Prestige off amazon and I popped it in my PS3. Suddenly it starts making all sorts of crazy noises and spits the disc out. I look at the disc and there's a security tag stuck to the data side!! Thanks amazon for nearly destroying my PS3!

when i first got my ps3 it was set to boot the disc first, which led to a lot of those hard drive rebuilds. They are from it not shutting down properly no doubt. Never had the issue since since I set it to boot to the xmb on start up

Yeah i thought my ps3 brokes it internet connection receiver thing last year a couple of months after buying it. And then i realised my laptop wouldnt work either and figured out my router had messed up.

Biggest scare ever since i had only had my ps3 for 2 months and i couldnt find my receipt.
I still cant findmy receipt so if my ps3 breaks im screwed.

I ran into the "HDD rebuilding" issue once when I had to unplug the electrical cord when my PS3 froze at a black screen, everything was intact. I think the whole rebuilding thing is a safety measure for the HDD to rewrite its system (boot) files while files on the HDD are intact.

After having mine for a few days it quit working. After 15 minutes or so, the big idiot finally figured out that the controller battery had run down and needed to be recharged :D Hey, I plugged the controller in via USB cable, but it still didn't work - probably because I didn't know enough to hit the PS button to get it to recognize it.
