Anyhow I was charging my 2 PS3 controllers, and as both of them had zero battery, I lefted them sit there charging for around 40-45min. I then recive a Message from a fried, read it. Then I let it sit there for a while longer since one of them still hasn't charged. When I am entering My room, I saw that the LCD suddenly turned black, and my PS3 made a loud noise when shutting down. When It did, It had a red light on... Turned it on again, sweating, and well it still works. It a 40GB PS3, And heck this scraed the HELL out of me, WHY did it shut down by itself? I am sweating cold here, worried about my PS3. Is this is remotly common? I mean what the hell happened?

Probably overheated. Not sure about the loud noise. I left my PS3 on all night by accident before and nothing like this happened. If it works fine right now then you should worry. Very suspenseful read BTW >_>.

How do you charge the controller vis pc usb ports? I tried it on mine but I presumed that it didn't work because the red light wasn't flashing.

You Know the click sound it makes when it turn off? well it was that sound but extremly loud...., I had it Vertical, but changed to horizontal and placed in a slightly wider space..., Anyhow it dosen't matter, rite? as long my PS3 works, But I am still sweating cold, damn that just a rush of adrenaline to me..., But why? It only went for like an hour with the 2 controllers charging...., Maybe the controllers caused it? Maybe my PS3 just likes to fukc up my mind?:P

I have a 60 gig that I never turn off and there is always a disc in the drive of some kind and I have never had a problem. As long as there is plenty of room around the console for air to flow around it then it will never overheat.

"Shutted off." *Shivers.* More power to you if you can really say that phrase so comfortably.

But yeah. I never had the problem, so I can't help.

same thing happened to my ps3 before, I turned it on, inserted the cd and after it went to the title screen, it just shutted off by itself, and I was like "wth!" so I just turned it back on and it worked perfectly fine, its still running smoothly till now, only happened once.... weird....

I think theres a feature when the controllers are done charging and the PS3 is idle, it will shut off the system.
