My Bad Company 2 disc did that for a few days one time, I still have no reason why it was doing it though.

Mine does that with some PS2 titles (80GB BC unit). I figure they're just out of round enough to make a noise, and the PS3's drive is probably more sensitive to that than most.

Just giving you a hard time; I mean, look at my first post here, I'm more than willing to believe you, it's just funny. You have to admit it's convenient. You have a Gears avatar, i seem to remember a gamertag related sig from your last thread, and now you're new PS3 is suffering all sorts of weirdness

I get this sometime too, although its normally cured by taking the disc out and putting back in. I'm not sure why the PS3 sometimes does it either. Mines a phat 80Gb PS3 btw. Its not has loud as the first poster described although.

Well it sounds like you're just having a streak of bad luck then, why not call sony? They might have a better fix or even get you a new console... its a worth a try, you're still well under warranty.. Also make sure its sitting in a level place

Well I know it's not popular to say around here, but the original launch units have lots of problems. I went through 2 60GB, and just bought my 3rd PS3 last week. The 60GB models in particular seem to have major issues. A poll conducted on this site revealed that around half of the owners had been forced to replace their $600 systems with the slim. So chill out. And TC, if it's any consolation, the slim seems to be pretty solid so far... quieter, less energy consumption, solid build. Just save up and replace your old unit. Best thing to do imo. The new data transfer feature makes it easy to keep all your games and settings... just make sure you add your PSN account to both units, enable wired internet on both, and disable your video and game account on the old one. It's a nice way to not lose anything.

I have had the same issue but it doesn't seem to have evolved into any sort of a problem other than being a bit noisy for a second or two (I've noticed it from over a year and the PS3 is still working fine and it's only on a few dvds). The few times it happens it's right after I put the disc in and starts loading and I get an abnormally loud wizzing sound from the disc drive for a second or two then it stops after the initial loading.

Yea-I think it's most likely a slightly warped dvd disc-i've also had the same on my 120GB-Purchased in Feb-PS3.But i sometimes notice the very same when ripping cds to the hard drive.

BINGO. sony cust service told me that while your ps3 can play dvd's and data disks, that you really shouldnt. they along with a local repair shop both claim that was the reason my 40 gig got blu ray drive failure.

stick with ps3 games and blu ray movies. i dl movies to my hdd to avoid this problem now.

the exact same one i had break lol. i still have the $400 paperweight. its not going to happen to everyone. some are just unlucky and get that lemon from the factory. electronics are like that. lots of variables. im just passing on what i was told by more informed sources. im sincerely gald that there are those like you that still have their older models, and theyre still working well.
