Well I know it's not popular to say around here, but the original launch units have lots of problems. I went through 2 60GB, and just bought my 3rd PS3 last week. The 60GB models in particular seem to have major issues. A poll conducted on this site revealed that around half of the owners had been forced to replace their $600 systems with the slim. So chill out. And TC, if it's any consolation, the slim seems to be pretty solid so far... quieter, less energy consumption, solid build. Just save up and replace your old unit. Best thing to do imo. The new data transfer feature makes it easy to keep all your games and settings... just make sure you add your PSN account to both units, enable wired internet on both, and disable your video and game account on the old one. It's a nice way to not lose anything.Nice try.....why is it that you always seem to have problems with your PS3?? You seem bogus...

Anyway, this thread needs to be locked now, OP's best advice is to call Sony, he got his ps3 used??? see thats the problem right thereI have had the same issue but it doesn't seem to have evolved into any sort of a problem other than being a bit noisy for a second or two (I've noticed it from over a year and the PS3 is still working fine and it's only on a few dvds). The few times it happens it's right after I put the disc in and starts loading and I get an abnormally loud wizzing sound from the disc drive for a second or two then it stops after the initial loading.
Yeah i had that same problem, i just ejected the disc as soon as it started and stopped using that DVD, but all other dvds so far work fine.. IDK broit works fine when i insert a game or a bluray, but when i insert an ordinary DVD, it goes haywire, and it sounds like a chainsaw. its is also a PS3 slin 120gb model. it got about 2 months ago.

Yea-I think it's most likely a slightly warped dvd disc-i've also had the same on my 120GB-Purchased in Feb-PS3.But i sometimes notice the very same when ripping cds to the hard drive.it works fine when i insert a game or a bluray, but when i insert an ordinary DVD, it goes haywire, and it sounds like a chainsaw. its is also a PS3 slin 120gb model. it got about 2 months ago.

BINGO. sony cust service told me that while your ps3 can play dvd's and data disks, that you really shouldnt. they along with a local repair shop both claim that was the reason my 40 gig got blu ray drive failure.
stick with ps3 games and blu ray movies. i dl movies to my hdd to avoid this problem now.

I watch dvd's all the time and have never had an issue; 40g Spiderman 3 bundle.the exact same one i had break lol. i still have the $400 paperweight. its not going to happen to everyone. some are just unlucky and get that lemon from the factory. electronics are like that. lots of variables. im just passing on what i was told by more informed sources. im sincerely gald that there are those like you that still have their older models, and theyre still working well.
this thread turned hot? awesome. yeah, i think that my rambo DVD set was filled with duds because they all make my ps3 vibrate, but my karate kid DVDs dont.
im bringing the topic back from the dead. i just but in the blu ray for avatar, and while it playes, my PS3 makes the "vrumvrumvrumvrum" sound. this is a new ps3 slim i got a few months ago. WTF is happening to me?
