Typically the TV shows the resolution of the video source, not the resolution it is displaying. Some HDTV's can accept 1080i/1080p sources, but will automatically downscale the picture to 720p. That happens 100% of the time with native 720p televisions that are displaying 1080i sources.
What kind of TV do you have?
when i bought my TV in the corner of the box in bright bold letters it said 720p display but when i setup my ps3 with hdmi, in the corner it says its displaying at 1080p. when i launch a game it goes to the native resolution supported which is usually 720p. when i launch a game like wipeout HD that supports 1080p it stays at 1080p. my question is why is my tv displaying 1080p when it only supposrts 720p. is the box a lie?psn_Jaimzl
same thing with my tv i got a sony 50 inch rear projection and it says 720 but everything comes out at 1080

doesnt matter what it says, the tv is still scaling to your native res.bizzy420Right. When you start up your PS3 and it says 1080p in the corner, that is not the output resolution. Many people believe that it is, so they think that their native 720p television is really displaying 1080p. What's really happening, however, is the TV is telling you that the input source is 1080p, but behind the scenes it is actually dowscaling the picture to display at 720p.
For example, look at the spec sheet for the Samsung LN40A450:
http://www.samsung.com/us/system/consumer/product/2008/03/05/ln40a450c1dxza/ln40A450_spec.pdf
It is a native 720p TV (1366x768 pixels) but accepts 1080p as an input source. Since it doesn't have enough pixels to display at 1080p (1980x1080 pixels) it has to downscale it.
im new to this hdtvstuff, so please bare with me.
i have a 32" vizio.720p. i have an xbox 360, and a ps3
when i play gears of war on the xbox 360 i hit the display botton its says 1080p. (how is it displaying 1080p when my tv is 720p)
when im playing ps3 metal gear, display says 1080p, but when im playing motor storm its 720p.
Why is that. i dont get it. xbox 360 is using component cables. and ps3 is using HDMI. (does it matter what hdmi wire your using or it dont matter)
also with movies i own a copy of hancock blue ray. its full hd. when i play it on the ps3 it have a display of 1080p. if my tv is 720p how is it displaying 1080p.
my question is: if you are running a 1080p application on a 720p display, so that it is downscaled, does it look better or is it exactly the same?
I bought a 32" Dynex about 2 years ago and noticed the same thing, its native resolution is 720p but when on the PS3 it shows 1080p, i had thought it was upscaling although not native, but still, 720p on a 32" still looks almost as good as 1080p.
if you buy a 720p HDTV in 17in/26in/32in/42in/125in.
it will only show you a 720p image because it can't do 1080p.
the source what you see in the top right or left corner when the game/film/whatever is what the source is, and not what your tv can do, this is just letting you know it accepts it but it is still playing it in 720p

Once my sister had one of that TVs, and the difference between native 1080p and 720p is vivid on PS3.
