NAT 3 means your router is blocking all ports the PS3 needs open. With out the port, or ports needed open, PS3 will not operate efficiently like it should online.

Forward ports through DMZ, that opens up all ports necessary

DMZ should be a last resort. Opening DMZ will open the PS3 to the world, so keep that in mind.

Also make sure to do a manual configuration on the ps3's network settings as opposed to auto, and, I think overall, a dmz on the ps3 would be much less harmful than for a computer, seeing as a ps3 doesn't have the same susceptibility that a computer does, since it runs it's own operating system, and .exe's, the most common virus format, won't be recognized by the ps3, although there's the possibility you would still be opening up your network to more than you might want.

You're forwarding the PS3's static IP address specifically. The PS3 uses via internet/games through their own security as well as DMZ opens up the ports that the PS3 needs accessing through. Educate yourself before you post useless responses.

Could anyone explain to me why my connection is still NAT type 3 when my PS3 is directly connected to my modem. I tried direct connecting to my modem after trying everything I could by opening ports on my router etc. I didn't know that was even possible to have a NAT type 3 connection when direct connected, and no I am not using dial up.

^^^

YOU HAVE TO INPUT THESE PORT SETTINGS INTO YOUR ROUTER.

Funny...I have NAT Type 3, but my communications in games works fine now. Weird.

Many applications require special port access to the Internet, and can be enabled using Port By-Pass. Here you can enter customized port access for additional applications.ProtocolPortRedirected to

portforwarding.com is your friend, with guides for almost every router explaining exactly what to do

Also if your router has DMZ just set your ps3 as DMZ - most routers u can just type in the PS3's mac address (found in the internet connection test on the ps3) so no need to even make your ps3 have a static ip
