Megaton is east of the vault I think. Someone should tell you something about it. Look at the Pip Boy map and it should show where you are, and a line pointing towards your objective, follow the line.
Go to Megaton. There are a few signs along the path pointing toward it.
The best thing, though, about Fallout 3 is that you can go anywhere you like after you leave the vault. Sure, the main story is to find out what's going on with your dad, but you don't have to follow that story. You could just go off in your own direction and have dozens of hours of fun before you even touch the main quest.
