Any 2.5inch SATA hard drive 5400RPM or 7200RPM, basically a notebook/laptop hard drive

For great prices on hard drives, go to www.newegg.com

I'm not sure the highest you could go up to. But I think 250gb is sufficient. Mine is 160gb

You need a 2.5" SATA notebook drive. 5400 RPM drives are recommended, but 7200 RPM drives also work. The largest size at the moment is 500 GB, but you'll pay heaps for 1 that size.

If you're planning to back up your PS3 data, you need an external hard drive (FAT32). If you have one, go to settings > system settings > backup utility. Then save on storage device (which is your external HDD)

Then after switching your PS3 HDD with the new HDD, go to system > system settings > Restore.

-

If you don't wanna back up data, skip all of the above, unscrew the blue screw first, pull out the PS3 HDD, unscrew all four screws, replace the HDD, screw back all four screws, slide HDD back in, screw blue screw and voila.
