I have been absent from this place for like 3 years (University will do that to you) and now i'm back and really eager to play games again. So im getting the PS3 tomorrow, but I need to know which version is best. Probably answered this question like a million times now, but i really dont trust in any salesman, i want to hear it from you fellow gamers. Like i said I need good reasons because I have heard many different things, but things like "the PS3 slim overheats and you cant play more than 1 hour" I really dont think that is entirely true. Enlighten me please.

Theres really no difference between the two except for the phat ps3 has BC but not all models do though. The slim is more energy efficient. I doubt its true that gaming for more than an hour will affect it at all since Method, LightR and I played for about 9 hours straight yesterday and nothing has happened to my slim.

lol, both are absolutely fine, but since Sony took out the other OS option, there's really no reason to get a fat now. And no, they don't overheat after a certain number of hours. I've had my PS3 on for about 7 hours already today, and it's just sitting there as I'm typing there, doing nothing but increasing my electricity bill.

First of all: "the PS3 slim overheats and you cant play more than 1 hour" is FALSE. Proof: my slim has been running for more than four hours yesterday morning and around three hours this morning and its still working fine... On topic though, I personally prefer the new slim. It is thirty three percent smaller than the fat, thirty six percent lighter than the fat and uses thirty four percent less electricity. Also, it packs a 120GB HDD or 250GB HDD which is more than the 80GB that the fat offers. The only two advantages the fat has over the slim is two more usb ports (slim has two, fat has four) and can play PS2 games :P

Of course, the two versions also look different. The old version has a shiny black cover (which I personally prefer butleaves lots of fingerprints)while the slim has a matta black cover (which does not attract as much fingerprints but looks kindadull in my opinion).

Just thought I'd add that ;)

Ive had my fat 40gb PS3 (changed to 320gb) for about 3 years, and have had no technical problems whatsoever so far :) Lots of my friends have slims, and theres nothing wrong with them, but really its your choice. I don't really see the reason of getting a fat anymore unless you like the appearance.

Own a Fat and a Slim. Got a slim because my 80GB died on me and my slim is great, no complaints at all rather then no BC, but thats it. Oh and with the slim there's no power switch in the back like the fat ps3s or ps2s, some people dont like that.

I say go with the 120GB Slim. It's smaller, much more energy efficient & it runs quieter & cooler. If you can get your hands on a brand new 80GB with BC or 60GB than go for it but that's very highly unlikely & it seems they are much more prone to the dreaded YLOD so just go with the Slim & have fun playing all the games you have missed over the past 3 years!

The YLOP the yellow light of death, ive heard about that. In fact I just called the store (I am in Argentina btw, time is different) and they tell me they have a 160GB fat PS3 and the new 250GB Slim PS3. I guess I will decide tomorrow thinking about what you guys posted here. Thanks a lot!

If the selection is only a 160GB Fat PS3 & a 250GB Slim PS3, I would recommend the 250GB Slim PS3. The 160GB Fat PS3 doesn't have BC & it offers the options as the Slim but it just runs hotter, uses more electricity & it's bulky & big PLUS there is a possibility of YLOD with the Fat model. Well have fun deciding & have fun playing 3 years worth of games!

I've been leaving my PS3 slim on for hours without even playing it, some time with the game on pause and come back and play with no problem. I've only ever experience it freezing up on me one time. And I've had it for..2 months or so..lol. I say get the Slim, it's much more reliable and the games out now are pretty good and will keep you busy for a month. MGS4, Uncharted 2, God of War 3..and other ones. After you beat those it wont be much to play because the PS3 is going through a dry spell right now and it doesn't look to be ending anytime soon.

Well I've had previously 2 Phat PS3s-Firstly the 60GB with B.C.,then more recently a 80GB which i upgraded to 320 GB,but then my sons 60Gb went YLOD of him so i let him have that one,and now i've got a 120Gb Slim which runs quieter and uses less power than my 2 previous consoles, and being the most up to date PS3 with the smaller cooler running chips,i feel more confident that it wont suffer the YLOD-but only time will tell on that score.

So i would say go for the Slim version simply cos it's the newest version of PS3.

Fat because of other OS.. wait a minute... Choose whichever you think looks better. HDD is swappable anyways.

Same here as I have 2 of those models(one for living room and one for bedroom). TC unless you want BC(20gb, 60gb and older 80gb), Memory Card readers and 2 more usb ports than I would go with the slim. So you have to ask the question if you want to play PS2 games on your PS3. If you do than go with the older models but you will probably have to buy it used. Otherwise the slim is fine.

Slim-

  • Quieter
  • Cooler
  • Smaller
  • Bigger HDD, no need to upgrade down the line
  • Better wifi signal (maybe)
  • Much less likely to die

Fat-

  • .....Shinier

For looks I like the fatty. But tbh if I could trade in my fatty straight-up for a slim I would.
I think I must have bought at a bad time. I got a 40G around the time of the first price drop. I've noticed it runs loud at times and suffers from the odd audio glitch (at random). Slims are better built imo.
